Biography

Samuel was born in Laneshaw Bridge, Lancashire, England in 1830 (see Notes). He was baptized in nearby Colne, Lancashire, England.[1] He was the 7th of 13 children.[2][3] By the time he was 8 years old, his family has resettled in Great Bolton, Lancashire, where his father Samuel Ramsden was originally from. In 1850, at the early adulthood age of 20, his father passed away. There were still 4 minor children at home at this point, but 3 of the adult children, including Samuel, lived at home and helped to support the family through their work in the cotton mill indsutry.[3][4]

Four years later Samuel left England and traveled to the USA[5] where he initially settled in Van Buren, Crawford, Ark. His brother Andrew Ramsden followed him to America 3 years later, but was unable to locate him upon arrival.[6]

He married Catherine Winkler from OH and they raised 4 children in Kibler, Crawford, Ark where he worked an an engineer.[7] He passed away 1876 and was buried in the Bushmiaer Cemetery in Kibler, Ark.[8]

Research Notes

This is the only Samuel Ramsden I can find who both settled in Crawdord, Ark and had a brother named Andrew from Lancanshire, England who also immigrated to America. However, the birth date of of his christening does not match the birth date on his burial headstone by 5 years. Perhaps he lied about his age for immigration? Additionally, there is family lore about three brothers from this family having immigrated to the US, and James seems to be that other brother.

There is a Samuel Ramsden from Lancashire, England who was christened in 1835, (son of Samuel and Jane) which would match the headstone date better. But he does not seem to have a brother named Andrew and he appears to have stayed in England from census records.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
