Cousins/Friends,
My analysis of the confusion over the Wives of William/s is this:
Thos. Ramsey Sr. ca. 1734-1790 had (among 11 other children) 2 sons:
1. William Newman Ramsey Sr. & 2. Thomas F. Ramsey Jr.
1. William Newman Ramsey Sr. b. ca. 1772 had a son
William Newman Ramsey Jr.
2. Thomas F. Ramsey Jr. had 2 sons
1. William (Newman) Ramsey II b. 1782 (I personally have no infowith the Newman middle name listed, tho William was no doubt namedfor his uncle. Any corroboration would be appreciated.)
3. Hailey Sanford Ramsey m. Esther Ziegler 1803 Hailey was suretyfor the marriage of "William Ramsey" to Susannah Ziegler, 1802
In my family data is a copy of an affadavit dated 16 Dec 1931, signedby S. H. F. Jones, a genealogist of Pittsylvania County, VA, listingamong other marriage bonds (Pittsylvania Co, I believe, since that'swhere the notary had his commission):
Mar. 17, 1794 William Ramsey - Rhoda McMillion.
(supplied by Dr. Harry Lee King Jr. of Franklin Co, VA)
This does NOT agree with the 1786 date listed in <tada> Wingfield.hmmmm.
Wingfield, notoriously erroneous in many places in his notable andextraordinary work may have here made another of his common errors.
Proof will lie in going to Chatham Co Courthouse and finding out. Ican do this in May on my trip to Franklin County which I am planning, unless another relative there can get me something solid before then.
Given a choice between Wingfield and a conflicting sworn, notarizedaffadavit of a professional genealogist I personally will NOT chooseWingfield unless positive proof contrary is offered.
If, as I have listed in my data, William Newman Ramsey Sr. was born1772, then the 1796 marriage to Rhoda McMillion is ever so plain. I amaware that a second marriage may have taken place and all the otherodd possibilities and possible oddities.
In addition, Information supplied by Joel Mize of Seattle, WA<JMize54901> shows:
1. William Newman Ramsey Jr., son of WNR Sr., named one of hisdaughters Rhoda, b. 25 May 1820 (no doubt after Rhoda McMillionRamsey, his mother)
2. John S. Ramsey, son of WNR Sr. named one of his daughters RhodaA. Ramsey b. 1825 (no doubt after Rhoda McMillion Ramsey, hismother)
3. one of WNR Sr's own daughters may have been named Elizabeth orRhoda b. ca. 1804 m. Jonathan Terrell 28 Sept 1816 d. bef. 1850.[info from JMize]
It is ONLY in the family of William Newman Ramsey Sr. that the nameRhoda appears at all (according to the data I have so far gathered.(P.S. please let me know if this is not so and supply my deficiency).
Which William Ramsey did Susannah Ziegler marry then?
My educated guess is that Susannah Ziegler was a sister (or cousin) ofEsther Ziegler who married Hailey Sanford Ramsey 1803. This is notmentioned in Armistead F. Ramsey's pamphlet on the Thos Jr. family asAFR was not totally familiar with all the second generaton of the ThosRamsey Sr. family.
I also surmise that Hailey was surety for his brother William.
Susannah m. William in 1802.
William, brother of Hailey S. Ramsey s/o Thomas Ramsey Jr.
This William b.ca. 1779? would have been a 1st cousin to WilliamNewman Jr. (b. ca 1795) and thus, if born (as he was) before any malechild of William Jr. would have been William Newman Ramsey II(assuming that his middle name was Newman).
Anne; GTNEL@aol.com
For your consideration-- I did not do this research and have notchecked it out but I have the death date for your William Newman as 17July 1843. Also that he married Susanna Zeigler (but I guess wediscussed that previously).
William Newman Ramsey b. c 1766 near Ajax, Pittsylvania Co, VA d. 17July 1843
m. Susanna Zeigler
I was looking back through my old papers to see where I actually gotmy information.
I am not sure which piece of information came from whom but sourcescited were Thomas F. Ramsey's will of 1790; Dorothy Ramsey Cundiff,Rocky Mt., Franklin Co, VA 1983; Ruth Ramsey Simmonds, 4918Stoneleigh, San Antonio, TX; Winefield Works-"VA Early Marriages"
I also find the D.A.R. Registration which says: "Thomas Ramsey wasborn in 1734 in Pittsylvania County, Va. and died in 1790 inPittsylvania County. His place of residence during the Revolution wasPittsylvania County. He married Frances Young before 1761. She wasborn June 5, 1740 and died April 6, 1806. They were the parents ofthe following children:
George m.Rhoda McMillion
William (hand written Newman [Neuman]) m. Susanna Ziegler(hand written)
Woodsey (or Woodson) m. Sally Witcher
Noton m.Rachael Witcher
Isaac
Thomas (JR. handwritten)
John
Charity m. MrAtkinson
Susannah m. MrCooke
Anna m.John Jefferson
Livinia m.Archibald Jefferson
Betsy m.Jesse Martin
Sally m.Drury Mustain
Thomas Ramsey assisted in establishing the American Independence whileserving as Patriot, Soldier and Surveyor. The took the Oath ofAllegience August 1, 1777. He furnished provisions for the Army."
On an old family group sheet, William Newman's wife was scratched outand Susanna Ziegler was written in. (I couldn't make out the namethat had been deleted.) On another later computer printout, there isa hand drawn star by his name and a check mark by Married: To SusannaZeigler (Susanna Zeigler is underlined.)
On a typed copy of Thomas "Ramsbe" 's will is a handwritten note thatsays, "Thomas F. Ramsey Sr. Will
From his will-It proves that William Neuman is his son. Jacob wasWilliam's son. Barbara was Hailey S. Ramsey's daughter. This madeJacob & Barbara second cousins, not first cousins as people hasbelieved all these years. This will proves my statement." Lastsentence was underlined.
Evidently there have been some questions. Perhaps because of so manychildren and such a long time span. On my list of children, WilliamNeuman is shown as the fourth child. As I said before, I have notchecked out any of this information. It was given to me by myfather's cousin. He worked on it some but I think a lot of it wasgiven to him--at least as far back as we are discussing.
Perhaps one day we will just have to go to Virginia, huh?

But there was also more than one William Ramsey (Sr & Jr);
and Jonathan Terrell is cited in one of the extracts of WilliamRamsey's
will contesting a later version. Also there are tax records that citethat
William Ramsey paid Jonathan Terrell's taxes as he then lived out ofstate.

Joel: Your name keeps popping up as I am surfing in search of WmNewman
RAMSEY and his descendants. Thought I would send you a rough idea of
what I had discovered thus far and see if you could shed some light in
areas I was still missing.
I am researching all the RAMSEY lines descendant from Thomas [F.]RAMSEY
Sr. as a birthday gift for Lemuel LOCKE who is descendant from bothWm.
Newman and Thomas F. Jr (by way of Hailey Sandford). Lemuel is having
and 80th birthday on September the 6th and I am trying to put together
as much info as possible before that date. Lem still lives in and onthe
original RAMSEY Texas homestead at Allen's Chapel and is quite proudof
his RAMSEY Roots.
I have more generations down from Jacob [s/o Wm N.] and Barbara [d/o
Hailey Sandford] with burial info on most of these descendants. After
the birthday, I will be able to pick Lem's brain and get further infoon
some of his cousins etc...will be happy to continue sharing info down
the road. I have info on the other lines as well if you are"collecting
the complete set."
The descendants of Wm N. seem to have spread far and wide...any helpyou
can provide in pointing me in the right directions would beappreciated.

Subject: [RAMSEY-L] Ramsay/Ramsey Surname
The origin of the surname Ramsay (Ramsey) is placed in formerHuntingdonshire, England, where Ramsey is a local name (Latin "deRameseia") According to the great Swedish scholar, Eilert Edwall,Ramsey means wild garlic island, the name of places in Huntingshire. Thus, the name is locational in orgin, and meaning "one who came from(de) Ramsey (wild garlic island)."
The Ramseys (Ramsay) of Scotch ancestry settled in Scotland during thereign of the Scottish King, David I, 1124-53; and the first Ramseyswho came to Scotland held property in Huntingdonshire. The Ramseysurname was first recorded in Scotland by Simund de Ramesie "whowitnessed the charter by Turstan filius Leuingus of the church ofLivingston to the abbey of Holyrood, c1153 or at least before1175..."; and who was granted lands in Lothian by David I in thetwelfth century. By the fourteenth century this surname was dividedinto several branches: Ramysey 1261, Rameseye 1293, Remesey 1316,Ramissay 1320, Ramhishay 1328, Ramesey 1378, Ramsa 1510.
The first of the name to settle in Elgin, Morayshire County, Scotlandwas a farrier (blacksmith) from Forfarshire, which is clearly theancestral seat for the Earl of Dalhousie (de Dalwussy). The head of
this clan was William de Ramessay, who witnessed a charter by David deLysurs to the Abbey of Neubotel, ca. 1233-36.
William Ramsey, who fought under Robert Bruce for the independence ofScotland, was one of the nobles who subscribed the celebrated memorialto the Pope in 1320, vindicating the rights and liberties of Scotland.
Ramsey can be both English or Scottish, and "in general" it appearsthat the Scottish have maintain the "a" (Ramsay) and the English the"e" (Ramsey). Although, many scottish emigrants lost the "a"
spelling due to their inability to sign their name, using a "mark" fortheir signature.
Ramsey was one of the names adopted by the MacGregors when their namewas proscribed.

Following a dispute over the title to the Garrison land,it was moved to Calhoun, Tennessee. During the time Meigs was theagent, settlers passing through the Cherokee land had to have a passissued by the agent.

Hello David, Thanks so much for responding to my e-mail. You had a lotof wonderful information that helped me so much...... ESPECIALLY thewill of William Ramsey, Sr. Do you happen to know who his father was?You have that it was Thomas Ramsey (and I had that also), but everyonethat I correspond with (e-mail) has convinced me that Thomas was thefather of the other William (Newman) Ramsey (b. 1783-85) who marriedSusannah Zeigler. Many people think that our "plain" William Ramsey(as they call him) was the son of John Ramsey (Thomas' brother). Haveyou ever heard this? And do you know
anything at all about John?
I am descended from the two William Ramseys (Sr. and Jr.). Wm. Ramsey,Jr. married Cynthia Guest, and they were my gr- gr-grandparents. Bythe way, I have all the rest of the names of the other children of Wm.Jr. and Cynthia (Guest) Ramsey if you want them. You only haveElizabeth Katy, b. 1817 listed. Perhaps you have them all listedsomewhere, but I didn't see them. There are about 13 or 14 children,
it seems to me. One of those children (David Samuel Ramsey who marriedCatherine Turner) was my gr-grandfather, and both he and his wife areburied here in Arkansas. A lot of my Ramsey relatives are buried inthat cemetery, and I go every year in the spring, and put flowers onall their graves.
I was so thrilled to find your website, and it has helped me verymuch, so if I can help you in any way with Ramsey genealogy, I wouldbe most happy to. Sincerely, Kathy Riddick <riddick@nwark.com>
