Biography

Frances or "Fannie" was born in 1861. She was the daughter of John L. Ramsey and Mary Jane (Foutz) Ramsey.[1] She first appears on the census in 1870 under the name Martha. There was a family story about a father who did not like the name selected by his wife, and steadfastly called his child "Martha" instead. This census suggests that the story applied to Fannie Ramsey. [2] On the 1880 census she is listed as Fanni. [3] Frances Ramsey married John Abram Glenn,1882, Augusta County, Virginia. [4] In 1900 they are enumerated on the federal census in the South River District of Augusta County, Virginia. [5] By 1910, they have moved to Staunton, Virginia. [6] In 1915 Fannie was widowed. She appears to have given up the home in Staunton and moved to Waynesboro. In 1920 she is enumerated as head of household with five of her eight children in the household and all but one grown. [7] In 1930 she is still in Waynesboro, but living alone except for one roomer. [8] She passed away in 1931 and is buried at Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Virginia.[9]
