Biography

This profile is part of the Ranck Name Study.

Elmer was born on 18 May 1876.[1] He was the son of Oliver Ranck and Adalinda Harrison.[2]

The family can bee seen on the 1880 US Census for Rome, Adams, Wisconsin.[3] The household members are listed:

Name - Age
Oliver Ranck - 41
Adalinda Ranck - 28
Floyd Ranck - 9
Elmer Ranck - 4
Howard Ranck - 1
Lavina Smith - 21

On 28 June 1894, Elmer and two of his brothers appeared in an article for the town of New Rome in the "Wood County Reporter" newspaper.[4] It was noted that Elmer was slowly recovering from "his long illness." The nature of his illness is unknown; inquiries to the family matriarch were answered and the question remains unsolved.

Also mentioned was Elmer's older brother Floyd:

Mr. F. E. Ranck, returned from Appelton, Saturday, where he has been attending school.
[probaby College as he was about 23 years old at the time.]

And younger brother Howard was also mentioned:

The boys of the vicinity are busily engaging training their horses to run at Spring Creek on the 4th of July. Those that will enter from New Rome are Walter Horton's Faro and Howard Ranck's Dexter.

Note: James Craney is also mentioned in the article as the owner of a new "top buggy." James is probably a cousin of the Ranck boys: their aunt Adelaide (twin sister of their mother) married Franklin Craney (son of James Craney).

Oliver, Elizabeth, and their children appear in Giles, Tennessee on the 1900 US census. Elmer is not with the family in this census.[5]

Based on the serial date of the watch given to her by Elmer, Faye Mary (Abbott) Ranck's pocket watch was manufactured in 1906. The watch was sold to Elmer by Chas J. Cord,[6] the owner of "Windolph and Cord's Jewelery," located in Grand Island, Nebraska. Considering the amount of time for the watch to be fitted to a case, distributed and sold wholesale, it is likely that the watch was purchased in 1908 as a wedding gift.[7]

Elmer married Faye Mary Abbott on 27 December 1908 in Grand Island, Nebraska.[8]

In 1910, Elmer and Faye are living in a boarding home (24 occupants) in Lusk, Wyoming.[9] Both he Faye were Christian Scientists.[10]

Elmer and Faye had only one child, a son, Paul Edward Ranck, born on 01 January 1911 in Lusk, Wyoming. [3] [10] [11] [12]

During World War I, the family was still in Wyoming. Elmer's draft card from 1918[13] has the following information:

Faye succumbed to an illness and died on 6 April 1929 in Santa Monica, California.[16] It is thought by her family that she had a brain tumor. She was eventually placed in an institution and died there.[17]

Sometime between 1943 and 1948, Elmer and Paul moved from Santa Monica to Montebello, California. They, and Paul's wife Ruth appear on the 1948,[24] 1950,[25] and 1952[26] voter registration indexes, the 1952 Santa Monica phone book,[27] and the 1954[28] and 1956 [29] voter registration indexes at 1436 S. Cedar Ave., Montebello, California.

Elmer died in Los Angeles County, California, on 28 Feb 1957,[1] and was buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.[30]

Employment and Economics

Elmer worked as a carpenter and at one time was a self-employed contractor. [11] The historical records give us the following information about him:

1920 - carpenter (contractor - self employed)[11]
1925 - carpenter[14]
1927 - carpenter[15]
1930 - carpenter, and also listed as a cabinet maker at a door and sash factory[18][19]
1931 - carpenter[19]
1940 - carpenter[21] (building contractor employee)[22]
1942 - carpenter[23]

Elmer was a self employed business owner and he owned his home free and clear (no mortgage).[11] We can see that the family migrated to California sometime between 1920 and 1925. It is possible that the lumber boom of Wyoming waned and that there were better opportunities in California. Indeed, during the 1920's Los Angeles was growing and there was a need for carpenters. The family suffered some financial difficulties during the depression. After the onset of the depression, Elmer's son Paul took a job as an ad-hoc fisherman to help support the family.[10]

Religion

Elmer and his wife Faye were Christian Scientists.[31]

Politics

The various voter registration rolls give us a glimpse into the political leanings of the family [B] by listing the voter's political party:

1932 - Republican[20]
1940 - Democrat[21]
1942 - Democrat[23]
1948 - Democrat[24]
1950 - Democrat[25]
1952 - Democrat[26]
1954 - Democrat[28]
1956 - Democrat[29]

Research Notes

A. The 1940 Census was the first to indicate who was interviewed for the information listed therein. In this case, the census taker indicates that Elmer gave this information.

B. Elmer's son Paul appears on the voter roles beginning in 1932 and his wife Ruth beginning in 1948, their political party affiliation mirrors that of Elmer's. It may be possible that the family shifted their allegiance to the Democrat party after Roosevelt initiated social welfare programs that they perceived to benefit the country.
