Biography

Joseph Rand was born in Newbury, Berkshire on 1 Mar 1792, the son of Joseph Rand and Hannah. The family at the time were Quakers and his birth was recorded in the Monthly Meeting of Reading & Warborough Friends. [1]

Joseph married Ann (surname and marriage date unknown). Ann was born in about 1782, and died on 11 Jun 1843. This is evidenced from her death certificate, which states she was the wife of Joseph Rand, a Mathematical Instrument maker.

In 1841, at the time of the Census, Joseph was living in Newbury, possibly in Market Place (the census is unclear as to which entries refer to Market Place). His age was given as 45 (rounded to the nearest 5 years) and he was described as a Worker in Metals. There is no mention of a wife or children in the census. [2] A female called Elisabeth Harris was living at the same address. There is no indication of her relationship to Joseph, but she may have been some sort of servant. Joseph also had a young apprentice.

In 1851, Joseph was still in Market Place, Newbury. In this census he was described as a "Philosophical Instrument Maker". Living, or perhaps just visiting, with him were his Nephew & Niece, Martha & William Giles. [3]

There is no mention of any wife or children in this census return.

Sometime after 1843, and possibly after 1851 but before 1861, Joseph married Mary - surname and date unknown. This is shown in the 1861 census, where Joseph still resided in Market Place, Newbury. By this time, he was described as an Optician. Joseph was 69 at this time, and Mary 48 [4]

On 17 Mar 1865, Joseph died in Market Place, Newbury, of "Ramollissement of the Brain Paralysis Certified". His death was reported to the Registrar by Lydia Millington, his sister.
