Biography

Mary was the daughter of Job Randall and Elizabeth Doughty Randall. She was born in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony on October 29, 1680.[1]

Marriage to Joseph Barstow

Mary and Joseph Barstow (Bearstow) were married in Scituate, Plymouth County in about 1699. [2]

Joseph signed his Will on July 15th, 1728 at Hanover, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay & in it he states,

" I give and bequeath to my well beloved wife Mary Barstow the one third part of my personal movable estate to be at her own dispose for ever also I give to my said wife the use and improvement of one third part of all my housing lands & real estate during her natural life."[3]

The children mentioned in the will included sons, James and Joshua, and daughters, Elizabeth Cushing, Mary and Abigail Barstow. His wife, Mary and son-in-law, Elijah Cushing, were to be executors of the will. Joseph died ten days later on July 25, 1728.[4]

On October 24, 1728, Mary Barstow and Elijah Cushing were made executors. [5] In January of 1729 Mary was made guardian for Joshua, age 14,[6] James, age 18, [7] and daughters Mary and Abigail. [8] Her son James became ill and signed a will on January 12, 1732 and died shortly after that date. [9]

In August of 1732 guardianship of her three surviving minor children (Joshua age 20[10] Mary, age 15 [11] and Abigail age 7 [12] was granted to Elijah Cushing, the husband of her oldest daughter, Elizabeth.

Marriage to Thomas Bryant

Mary (Randall) Barstow and widower Thomas Bryant entered their intention to marry on April 12, 1835. [13] Mary was listed as being "of Hanover". Thomas was "of Scituate". He was a widower with six children. The couple lived in Scituate. Thomas signed a will on December 15, 1748 in Scituate. [14] He and Mary must have had a prior understanding because the will states,

""I give to my beloved wife Mary Bryant all those articles and things which by Covenant with her before marriage I was obliged to do and reform"

On August 23, 1749 Mary's daughter Abigail married Thomas' son Lemuel Bryant.

Will of Mary Randall Barstow Turner

Mary wrote her Will on the 3rd of December, 1753, at Hanover, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay.[15] She mentioned her four surviving children: Joshua Barstow, Elizabeth Cushing, Mary Sylvester and Abigail Bryant. One interesting item in the will was:

"My will given to said Abigail saving my side-saddle and wearing apparel shall forthwith after my decease be by executor put into the hands of Elijah Cushing Esq. and Elijah Cushing Jun. both of Hannover (sic) aforesaid In trust to be improved to the best advantage for them and her heirs and not delivered t her or her heirs until after the death of her husband Mr. Lemuel Briant unless the said Elijah Cushing Esq. And Elijah Cushing Jun. should apprehend the said Abigail to be in want of the same or any part thereof. "

Her Will was proved on March 2, 1761 in Plymouth County Probate Court by John Cushing. [16] The original administrator was Joshua Barstow who apparently died before the completion of the task & on the 2nd of March, 1764, Josiah Cushing was then appointed to complete the administration.[17]

Research Notes

Mary's specific death date is unknown at this point. Since the probate was not until 1761, it seems likely that she died closer to that date than the date of her Will.
