Biography

William Howard Randall was born on January 28, 1830 in Cutler, Washington, Maine. He was the son of Capt. Charles Randall and Mary (Huntley) Randall. In 1850 he worked as a seaman, living with his widowed mother and siblings in Cutler.[1][2] He married Mary E. Dennison in Cutler on June 3, 1856. According to family tradition, the family was poor and William farmed, fished, tended sheep, and had a smokehouse to make ends meet.

In the 1860 census he appeared as a Cutler seaman with wife Mary and family.[3] A William H. Randall registered for the Union draft in July 1863, but since he gave his residence as Berwick, York, Maine this may not be the same man.[4] In 1880, he lived in Cutler with Mary and children, working as a laborer.[5] By 1900, William was a widower, living with his son John W. and daughter in law Maggie.[6] He also appears in the Canadian census of 1901, staying across the Passamaquoddy on White Head Island, Grand Manan, New Brunswick, with his son Mark. [7] By 1910, he was back in Cutler living with his son Mark H.[8] He died on January 26, 1914, Cutler, Washington, Maine.[9]
