Biography

Lowell was born in 1894 in Alfred, NY, the son of Alva Fitz Randolph and Mary Caroline Hoff. He grew up there, graduating from the local high school in 1912 and then completing his undergraduate studies at Alfred University in 1916. He continued his education at Cornell University, getting involved in work there on the genetics and cytology of maize and earning a PhD in Botany in 1921. He married a fellow graduate student in Botany, Fannie C. Rane in 1922. They settled in Ithaca, and brought up three children there. Lowell worked for 24 years as a cytologist with the Office of Cereal Investigations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture stationed at Cornell. In 1926-1927, the family accompanied him on a fellowship to visit a number of laboratories across Europe. In 1947, he resigned from the USDA to work on cytogenetics full time with Cornell Department of Botany. In 1957-1958, they spent six months on a Fulbright Award at Aligarh Muslim University in India. His wife devoted much of her time to assisting him in his research. After he retired in 1962, he continued his research during the summers in Ithaca and during the winters with the Fairchild Tropical Garden in Miami, FL. His research on plant genetics got him interested in iris and using it for experimental breeding techniques; he became a leading expert on the flower, winning several awards and serving as the President of the American Iris Society in 1960-1962. Lowell and Fannie kept extensive iris gardens at their home in Ithaca, which attracted many visitors. Lowell passed away in Ithaca in 1980.

Lowell's family had a long history of involvement in the Seventh Day Baptist Church, from participating in its establishment in New Jersey in the late 1600s to being part of a tight knit church community first in New Jersey for the 1700s and then in West Virginia for the 1800s. Lowell and his sister Vida were the first to break from that community to lead independent, secular lives pursuing their interest in science. His other sisters remained part of the church community, with his sister Elizabeth becoming a well-known Seventh Day Baptist evangelist.

A much more detailed account of his life and especially his research can be found at his Wikipedia entry, at an even more detailed WikiVisually entry and in the memorial prepared by his colleagues at Cornell University which is available online.

Lowell has been mentioned in controversy surrounding one of his research assistants and student, Barbara McClintock, who was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1983. A narrative was generated about the discrimination she faced as a woman, including an early conflict with Lowell over authorship. A 2003 article by Kass gives that story some perspective: Lee B Kass, 2003. Barbara McClintock, Nobel-Prize-Winning Geneticist. Genetics, 164:4; 1 Aug 2003: 1251-1260; accessed at Oxford Academic

Surname note

In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members in the family where Lowell is a child as their middle name as if part of their surname: In some censuses, the family is recorded using FitzRandolph or Fitz Randolph as the surname including Lowell's mother, Mary C (Catherine) FitzRandolph. Lowell did not apply the same practice in the family that he headed: his wife and daughter did not use the Fitz, so his children and wife are given the Randolph surname. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Fitz Randolph as Last Name at Birth for Lowell, his siblings and father. (Need to confirm how Fitz Randolph was used in the Alva Fitz Randolph family in legal documents and when births were recorded.) Please don't hesitate to contact the profile manager if you think this decision should be reviewed!

Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 4th-6th Cousins, based on sharing 49 cM across 4 segments; Confidence: not given.
  • Maternal relationship is confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between Tom Randolph and Roger Brady, third cousins. Their MRCAs are John Hoff and Elizabeth Ann Gaston, their second great grandparents. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 4th-6th Cousins, based on sharing 65.8 cM across 4 segments; Confidence: Extremely High.

Maternal relationship is confirmed by a triangulated group consisting of Thomas Fitz Randolph (GED kit M011134), Linda Kovach (GED Kit M412337) and one anonymous test-taker at 23andme (name withheld to protect their privacy) sharing a 18.3 cM segment on chromosome 8 from 121,000,000 to 132,000,000, with Peter Swisher III (1779-1830) and Susannah Rinehart (1779-1856) identified as the common ancestors.

Paternal relationship is confirmed by a triangulated group consisting of Thomas Fitz Randolph (GED kit M011134), Lucy Hansen (23andme) and Robert Lee Carson (GEDmatch kit M085143) sharing a 18.4 cM segment on chromosome 20 from 21,000,000 to 29,000,000, with Thomas William Davis (1719-1795) and Tacy Crandall (1721-1795) identified as the most recent common ancestors.

The paternal relationship is confirmed by two triangulated groups. The first group consists of Thomas Fitz Randolph (GED kit M011134), Eileen Garrett (23andme) and Robert Lee Carson (GEDmatch kit M085143) sharing a 4.4 cM segment on chromosome 22 from 18,188,769 to 20,658,391 (GEDmatch analysis), and the second group consists of Thomas Fitz Randolph (GED kit M011134), Lucy Hansen (23andme) and Robert Lee Carson (GEDmatch kit M085143) sharing an approximate 18.4 cM segment on chromosome 22 from 21,335,259 to 28,015,752 (combined 23andme AFI and GEDmatch comparisons). These two discontiguous segments are both contained in a longer segment shared by Tom Randolph and Robert Lee Carson (18,180,154 28,015,752, 23.8 cM), suggesting the two triangulated segments come from the same ancestors common to all four people, and those common ancestors are identified as Thomas William Davis (1719-1795) and Tacy Crandall (1721-1795). This joint triangulation confirms that Nathan is their son and one or more of their three children Martha, Elizabeth or Mary is also their child, and possibly William G. ‘Greenbrier Billy’, but determining which will require additional triangulation.

Untriangulated DNA Matches

Researcher Randolph-1145 has identified up to four autosomal DNA segments which which may have passed from Mary Caroline (Hoff) Fitz Randolph to her son Lowell Fitz Randolph: Thomas Fitz Randolph (GEDmatch kit M011134) and Winnetta Bowman (23andme) share four segments (23andme FI:A analysis):

  1. 21.2 cM segment on Chromosome 1 from 109,000,000 to 147,000,000 for 2630 SNPs
  2. 10.1 cM segment on Chromosome 1 from 164,000,000 to 172,000,000 for 2047 SNPs
  3. 13.5 cM segment on Chromosome 4 from 96,000,000 to 113,000,000 for 2917 SNPs
  4. 6.6 cM segment on Chromosome 12 from 1,000,000 to 3,000,000 for 747 SNPs.

Common ancestors for the match have been tentatively identified as:

  1. John Gaston (1752-1829) and Ann Davisson (1765-1864)
  2. Peter Swisher III (1779-1830) and Susanah Rinehart (1779-1856).

Researcher Randolph-1145 has identified an autosomal DNA segment which may have passed from Alva Fitz Randolph to his son Lowell Fitz Randolph, and from Lowell to his son Robert Fitz Randolph: Thomas Fitz Randolph (GED kit M011134) and Forrest Fitz Randolph (GED kit A817547) share a 13.9 cM segment on chromosome 11 from 123,444,417 to 130,519,957 (GEDmatch analysis, 28 Nov 2015). Common ancestors for the match have been tentatively identified as:

  1. Samuel Fitz Randolph (1738-1825)
  2. Thomas William Davis (1719-1795) and Tacy Crandall (1721-1795)
  3. David Fitz Randolph (1690-1773) and Sarah Molleson (1695-1738).
