Biography

Mary FitzRandolph ... [1]

Mary, wife of Daniel Lambert, is named in the 3 June 1765 will of her father Jeremiah (Fitz)Randolph in Elizabethtown, Essex, NJ. [2]

Mary was born in 1741 probably in Piscataway or Elizabeth, NJ to Jeremiah Fitz Randolph and Ruth Dunn. Mary married Daniel Lambert, the strongest evidence for which is found in the 1765 will of Mary's father, Jeremiah Fitz Randolph, which explicitly mentions his daughter "Mary, wife of Daniel Lambert". Together they had seven children, but there is only very spotty information about their details. It is not clear whether the family remained in New Jersey, possibly in Westfield where there was a Daniel Lambert on the tax list for 1781, or moved to Ohio. She is thought to have passed away in 1830, but no supporting evidence has been provided.

Children usually associated with Mary and John Lambert:

  • Elizabeth, b. 1768
  • Eunice, b. 1777, d. 1842
  • John
  • Benjamin
  • Rachel
  • Charlotte
  • Rebecca

Surname note

This surname had many different spellings, including Fitzrandle, Fittsrendolfe, or Fittsrandolfe[3], with FitzRandolph or Fitz Randolph emerging as the most common. Fitz Randolph is being recommended as the standard, recognizing though that in later years, Fitz sometimes became used as a middle name for sons and optional for daughters. In Benjamin father's Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members as part of their surname: the Oris H.F. Randolph genealogy[4] assumes this to be the case when listing the children in the family in which Mary is a child. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Fitz Randolph. (Need to confirm how Fitz Randolph was used in legal documents and when births were recorded documents.) Please don't hesitate to contact the profile manager if you think this decision should be reviewed!

Polly and Cherie are 13th cousins 7 times removed

Mary (Randolph) Lambert (abt.1741-) and Cherie (Randolph) Freeman are both descendants of Joan (Hanham) Brooke (1358-1437).

Randolph-1261 and Randolph-733 are not ready to be merged because: Such an age difference and there were many Randolphs in this region. I would reevaluate this merge with a source

Randolph-1261 and Randolph-733 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, husband. Birth years are different, but 1710 is not consistent with parents' info, so should be more like the 1741 in Randolph-1261. Children are different, but because the children profiles are incomplete. Josiah as child will need to be confirmed -- he might be a different family. Looks like a good opportunity to reconcile some of the Lambert info!

Jane: take a look at what I have done with this profile for Mary 'Polly' Fitz Randolph (which will need to be merged with Randolph-733) and for her husband's profile (Lambert-1614). Do you agree with how Daniel fits into his family? And would you have more information to get the children's profiles started? Will need to coordinate with Kay Carter -- are you already in touch with her?
