Virginia was born at Jefferson's Monticello Plantation where she spent much of her childhood, sharing an affinity for music with her grandfather. Virginia married Nicholas Trist, the grandson of an old friend of Jefferson's secretary, after a long engagement at Monticello. After her husband's death she lived with one of her 3 children in Alexandria, Virginia, dying there in 1882
