Research Notes

Original Details:

Notes 1. This statement says Peyton's wife was Elizabeth Lasen (or Lawson), while other sources indicate Peyton's wife is Mary Elizabeth Payne. Research suggests that Peyton had three wives.

There are conflicting accounts of which wife bore what child. According to this source, Luncinda (Peyton's daughter) claimed to be of Cherokee descent via the Randolphs. It also stated that Elizabeth Lawson was the mother of most of his children. In a deposition her husband declared that:

"...Lucinda my wife always claimed to be a relative of the Cherokee nation of Indians, that the names of the Paton [Peyton] Randolph family are as follows, Elizabeth his wife, her maiden name Lasen [Lawson], their children:

Thomas Randolph Chism Randolph Ruben Randolph Pleasant Randolph Landcaster[Lancaster] Randolph Jeptha Randolph Paton [Peyton] Randolph Jr : Daughters: Dorcus Randolph Lucinda Randolph Sallie Manurva [Minerva] Randolph

Signed by Robert Lankford this June 2, 1889"[2]

Another source that discusses the Children of Peyton Randolph states, "The exact names of the children of Peyton Randolph and Mary Elizabeth Randolph were obtained from a letter answered to Mr. C.K. Hill from Elizabeth Randolph VanWinkle, daughter of Reuben and Sarah Bumbalough Randolph. "Peyton Randolph and Mary Payne had the following children: (9) Nine in all.... Thomas Randolph, Ruben Randolph, Chisum Randolph, Pleasant Randolph, Jeptha Randolph, Lancaster Randolph, Peyton Randolph Jr., Lucinda Randolph, and Lucy Randolph. This list of Peyton's children "has been documented" by a handwritten letter from 1917 by Elizabeth Randolph VanWinkle (5th child and daughter of Ruben Randolph) in which she states: "Brothers of Father " and she gives the above list". -- Dick Zieman, 29 Dec 2007[4

2. Most histories do not mention a Randolph family connection to the Cherokee Nation. If this Peyton is half Cherokee, it is likely from his mother's side. It seems such a well researched family would have other mentions of Native American ancestry. It has been established, via DNA and genealogical research that this Peyton is not the son of William, who was descended from Henry "Uncle Henry" Randolph. Instead, he was the son of Thomas the son of another Henry Randolph, also from Virginia, born about 1721. It is possible that there is not as much research on this less prominent line.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peyton by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peyton:

Randolph-3047 and Randolph-1652 are not ready to be merged because: After thinking about this more, and reading the comments below, I wonder if they really are different people.

Maybe Mary Elizabeth (Payne) Randolph wasn't married to Peyton Sr, but instead was married to Samuel Peyton . More research probably warranted.

Peyton married to Mary Payne in 1787. issue: Robert Payne; Mary; Reuben; Chisholm; Thomas; John; Nathaniel; Pleasant Sr.; Jeptha; Tabitha; Miriam; Lucinda; Lancaster; Rebecca; Peyton jr.; Malinda . I would like to enter my line but this Peyton blocks the entry.
