Biography

Matoaka Amonute Powhatan
Judith Randolph is a descendant of Pocahontas. Here is the trail.

Research notes

Judith and her husband were both descendants of Pocahontas.

Her parents were full 2nd cousins, both being great-grandchildren of the Gateway immigrant William Randolph of Turkey Island (a descendant of King Edward III) and his wife Mary (Isham), daughter of the Gateway immigrant Henry Isham.

Her husband, Richard Randolph, was another great-grandchild of the same couple. He was therefore full 2nd cousin of Judith's father, Thomas Mann Randolph, and was full 1st cousin of Judith's mother, Ann (Cary), by descent from Col. Richard Randolph of Curles and his wife Jane Bolling (a descendant of Pocahontas).

Richard Randolph's mother, Frances (Bland), was yet another great-grandchild of William and Mary (Isham) Randolph, making Richard's parents full 1st cousins once removed.

Richard's parents were also half 2nd cousins by descent from the immigrant Robert Bolling, who was also great-great-grandfather of Judith's mother.

Judith and her husband were therefore

  • full 1st cousins once removed, through her mother and his father
  • full 2nd cousins once removed, through their fathers
  • full 3rd cousins, through her father and his mother
  • half 3rd cousins once removed, through their mothers.

They married in 1789, and lived at Bizarre plantation with Richard's unmarried brother John (later of Roanoke). They had 3 sons

  • Tudor, who died unmarried
  • St. George, a deaf mute
  • _____, of whom nothing seems to be known (Robertson, p. 48)

St. George was evidently named after Richard's stepfather, Judge St. George Tucker, and Tudor after the judge's half brother Thomas Tudor Tucker, U.S. Treasurer.

In 1793, Richard was sensationally charged with murdering a baby alleged to have been born to Judith's unmarried younger sister Nancy, then also living at Bizarre. Richard was defended by Patrick Henry and escaped conviction.

Richard died in 1796 under mysterious circumstances. Nancy was accused of poisoning him in a hate campaign mounted by his brother John, who eventually forced her to leave Bizarre in 1805. John himself relocated to his famous seat Roanoke in 1810. Bizarre burned down in 1813, and Judith then relocated to a smaller house near Farmville.

Judith and her husband could possibly be the grandparents of the "erotic alchemist" Paschal Beverley Randolph (Wikipedia) through their mysterious 3rd son, if he existed, and if it is correct that Paschal's father was a nephew of John Randolph of Roanoke.
