Biography

Sarah was born in 1795 in Piscataway, New Jersey, the daughter of Jesse Fitz Randolph and Delilah LaForge. Soon after her birth, her family moved to join other members of the New Jersey Seventh Day Baptist community that had moved west and settled in New Salem, Virginia (present day West Virginia). She grew up there and continued to live with her parents as an adult. She married late in life when she was 48 years old to the recently widowed Rev. Peter Davis in 1843. She joined him at his home nearby in Greenbrier, Doddridge County. She never had children. She died there in 1868 and is buried with her husband in the Greenbrier Seventh Day Baptist Cemetery in Doddridge County, WV.

  1. Rev. Peter Davis and Sarah Fitz Randoph married on January 11, 1843 in Harrison County, Virginia.[1] The marriage bond was dated January 1, 1843.[2].

Surname note

In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members as part of their surname: the Oris H.F. Randolph genealogy (referenced below) assumes this to be the case when listing the children in both the family in which Sarah is a child. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Fitz Randolph. (Need to confirm how Fitz Randolph was used in legal documents and when births were recorded documents.) Please don't hesitate to contact the profile manager if you think this decision should be reviewed!

Geography Note

Sarah lived her childhood in Harrison County which at the time was part of the State of Virginia. After marrying, she lived with her husband in Doddridge County which had just been carved out of Harrison. These counties were in the part of Virginia that in 1863 became the State of West Virginia a few years before her death.
