Biography

Fannie was born in 1897 in Durham, New Hampshire to Francis 'Frank' William Rane and Elizabeth Bailey. Her father was teaching at the college there. Her father became the first State Forester of Massachusetts and the family moved to Newton on the outskirts of Boston, and Fannie grew up there. She did her undergraduate studies at Wellesley College, MA, where she displayed her father's athletic abilities as a baseball star in an inter-class competition.^[1] She graduated from Wellesley in 1918 and eventually continued her studies, getting an MS degree in Botany in 1923 at Cornell University. While at Cornell, she met and married Lowell Fitz Randolph in 1922. They spent their life in Ithaca, NY where her husband was a professor in Botany at the university, and raised three children there. In 1926-1927, the family accompanied Lowell on a year-long visit to European laboratories. Fannie did some work with the Cornell Botany Department^[2] over the years, but essentially spent much of her time assisting her husband in his botanical research. Her husband died in 1980, and she passed away in 1981.

Her correct birth year is 1897; there is an error in the birth record found on the FamilySearch site. A correct version is posted with this profile.
