René Chartier was first married in France to Magdeleine Ranger or Rangier, they had signed a marriage contract on 23 July 1645 before notary Massot in Poitiers.

Par devant les notaires et tabelions royaux à Poictiers / furent présents en leurs personnes Sire Pierre Chartier marchand/meusnier, Mary Paillé sa femme, René Chartier aussi meusnier / leur fils, lesdits femme et fils dudit Chartier père / bien et dûment octorisés pour l'effet des présentes, d'une part, et François Reugier, aussy meusnier, et Magdelène / Reugier, sa fille et de défuncte Marguerite Bourcier sa première / femme, qu'il a aussy bien et deument octorizée pour l'effet des dictes présentes...^[1]

Note: The actual contract image is attached after the transcription of the contract, of which I have taken the beginning part to transcribe here. The name was written Reugier as far as can be made out, with the transcriber noting in margin Rangier. It is also seen as Ranger in later documents.

Died 1658 in Poitiers, Vienne, Poitou-Charentes, France at age 36-37.^[2]

Quatre enfants sont baptisés: Pierre (pionnier), 16-09-1646, marchand de fourrures, célibataire décédé au Fort St-Louis (Illinois), 00-04-1684; Jacquette, 03-02-1649; Jeanne-Renée (pionnière), 09-08-1652 et Martin (pionnier), 01-06-1655, marchand de fourrures décédé hors du Québec. Sa femme Madeleine Ranger (François et Marguerite Bourcier), est inhumée le 30-01-1658. Ses grands-parents paternels sont René Chartier et Thomasse Briard^[3][4]

The marriage record does not mention her parents name, but it has a signature "Jehan Ranger". The contract indeed has François Rangier/Rougier and Marguerite Bourcier [1]
