Alva (ALVIE) Anderson Rankin was born in 1897 in Calhoun, Mississippi, the son of Joe Rankin and Emma Lewellyn. He was the fifth of their twelve children. Alvie married Lydia Miles (1899-1987) on 12 April 1919 in Van Zander, Texas. They had two (three?) daughters, a girl, b. abt. 1920 (presumably stillborn); and Ona Van Rankin (1922-1932). Alvie died in 1930 in Terrell, Texas. Note: this family tree collection mentions a second marriage (to Lela), but I believe that is an error. Lydia is listed as Lela on the 1930 Census (below). [1]
In 1900, the Rankin family lived on a rented farm in Sarepta, Calhoun, Mississippi. The household included Joe M. Rankin, 36, a farmer; his wife of nine years, Emma M. Rankin, 28, who had had six children, five of whom were living; and their five children (including Alvie A., 3). All members of the family were born in Mississippi. [2]
In 1910, Alvie Rankin, 13, lived with his parents and seven siblings in Lafayette, Mississippi. His father was a farmer. Alvie was a farm laborer. His parents had been married 20 years, and had had 11 children, 8 of whom were living. [3]
Alvie Anderson Rankin, 21, registered for the WWI draft on 24 august 1918 in Wills Point, Van Zandt, Texas. He was born 26 July 1897 in Calhoun, Mississippi, where his father was also born. Rankin was self employed. He lived and worked at Route 5, Wills Point, Texas. His contact was J.M. Rankin, Wills Point. Alvie was of medium height and build, with blue eyes and dark hair. [4]
A.A. Rankin and Miss Lydia Miles were married on 12 April 1919 in Van Zandt County, Texas. It was the first marriage for both parties. J.L. Ross officiated. [5] [6]
In 1920, the Rankins lived on a rented farm on Cross County Road, Van Zandt County, Texas. Alvie A. Rankin, 22, born in Mississippi, was a farmer. His wife, Lydia Rankin, 20, was born in Oklahoma. Living on a nearby farm were Alvie’s parents and seven siblings. [7]
On 25 October 1926 in Edgewood, Van Zandt, Texas, a daughter, unnamed at birth was born to Alvin Anderson Rankin, a farmer, and Lydia Miles. [8] [9] Note: this baby must have died young. She does not appear with the family in the 1930 Census.
In 1930, the Rankin family lived on a rented farm in Wills Point, Van Zandt, Texas. The family included Alva (Alvie) A. Rankin, 32, head of household, not working; his wife, Lela (Lydia), 30; their daughter, Ona V., 8; Alvie’s brother, Max J., 25, a dairy operator; and his wife, Mattie Lou, 21. [10]
A.A. Rankin, a married dairyman, died of pulmonary abscess and pneumonia, after a 14 day stay (at hospital?) in Terrell, Kaufman, Texas on 3 June 1930. He was born in Mississippi, the son of J.M. Rankin and Emma LewEllen (sic), both born in MS. The informant to his death was J.K. Rankin, of Wills Point, Texas. [11]
Alvie Anderson Rankin, 33, died on 3 June 1930 in Kaufman, Texas. He is buried with his daughter, Ona Van Rankin, 1922-1933, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Edgewood, Texas. His widow, Lydia remarried. She is buried with her second husband at another cemetery. Alvie was born in Mississippi in 1896, the son of Joe M. Rankin and Emma Llewellyn. [12]
Ona Van Rankin, 10, a student, died of meningitis and influenza in a Terrell, Texas hospital on 6 December 1932. She was born 9 February 1922 in Grand Saline, Texas, the daughter of A.A. Rankin and Lydia Miles. The informant to her death was her mother, Mrs. A.A. Rankin, residence: 6934 Hammond. [13]
