Biography

Joe was born in 1904. He is the son of Joe Rankin and Emma Lewellyn. ^[1]

In 1910, the Rankin family lived on a rented farm in Lafayette County, Mississippi. The household included Joe M. Rankin, 45, a farmer; his wife of 20 years, Emma, 27, who had had eleven children, eight of whom were living; their children, Odie, 16; Alvie, 13; Etta, 11; Marvin, 9; Moxie (John, Jr.), 6; Lillian, 4; Melvin, 2; and Harvey, 3 months of age. All members of the family were born in Mississippi. ^[2]

In 1920, the Rankin family lived on their farm in Van Zandt, Mississippi. The family included Joe M. Rankin, 55, a farmer; his wife, Emma M., 47; their children, Etta C., 19, a farm laborer; Marvin, 18; Joe M., 15; Lillian M., 14; George M., 12; Harvey, 9; and Charley E., 7. Living nearby was Alvie A. Rankin, 22, and his wife, Lydia, 20. ^[3]
