Biography

John’s father died in 1893. His mother remarried John McKinney around 1899-1900.

In 1900, the McKinney family lived in a rented house in Los Angeles city, California (house number 2645, street name unintelligible). The family included John J. McKinney, 39, born in Illinois in June 1861 (parents b. NY), manager of an ice company; his wife of less than one year, Miriam McKinney, 36, b. TN, June 1864 (parents b. TN), who had had two children, both living; her children, both born in Iowa, and whose father was b. IA, John Rankin, 12, b. May 1888, in school; and Charles Rankin, 8, b. June 1892. Also living with them was Harriet Wheeler, 53, b. NY, a widow, and a housekeeper.^[1]

In 1910, the McKinney family lived in their rented house in Los Angeles city, California. The household included John G. McKinney, 47, born in Illinois, general manager of an ice company; his wife of ten years (first marriage for him, second for her), Miriam C. McKinney, 43, born in Tennessee, who had had two children (from pervious marriage), both living; her children, both born in Iowa, and both in school, John W. Rankin, 20; and Charles Rankin, 16 (their father was born in Illinois). Also living with them was Lena Kakkinan, 25, born in Finland, a servant.^[2] NOTE: their house number was 2645, street name unintelligible; obviously the same house they lived in in 1900.

In 1920, the Rankin family lived in a rented home on Flower Street in Los Angeles, California. The household included John W. Rankin, 31, an attorney; his mother, Marian McKinney, 53, a widow; and his brother, Charles C. Rankin, 27, junior officer at U.S. shipping.^[3]

John Walker Rankin III was born in 1888 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of John Walker Rankin (b. Iowa) and Miriam Charles Kellogg (b. TN or MS, near boarder). He served in the military during WWI (1 april 1918) and carried Government War Risk Insurance (29 June 1920), and attended university in California (Aug. 1908). In April 1942, he applied for a delayed birth certificate, while a resident of 107 S. Lapeer Dr., Los Angeles, CA. John married Enge Gladys Hoyer (1885 England - 1979 Oregon; who is buried at Valhalla Memorial Park, N. Hollywood, CA). John died in Los Angeles County, California in 1948, and is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, CA.^[4]

The Rankin house at 107 La Peer, Los Angeles was built in 1925. A Spanish style, 1780sf, three bedroom house located near Beverly Hills, roughly between Pacific Design Center and UCLA, in the Mid City West neighborhood, is valued at about $2.3 million (as of Feb. 2021). The house has a charming tiled courtyard entry; wide, arched interior doorways; and a pool, sheltered pool room, and an sturdy arbor in the small backyard. Click the link for photos.^[5]
