William was born 17 April 1817 in Dunnottar, Kincardineshire, Scotland. He was the son of David Rankin and Mary Hadden. [1]
William Rankin married twice. He had three children with his first wife, Margaret Strachan: David Alexander, 1859; Charle Hugh, 1861; and Mary Jane, 1865. Margaret died in 1866. William later married Anne Grant. They had four children: William C., 1871; Betsy Ann, 1873; Jessie Grant, 1874; and Alexander I., 1877-1943 (FaG# 231661603).
