This family tree shows that Joseph A. Rankin was born about 1803 in Madison, Armstrong, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph A. Steen Rankin (1774 Ireland - 1839 PA) and Elizabeth Jane Johnston (1792?- 1858) (note: if she was born in 1792, she could not have been his mother). Joseph Jr’s first wife was born about 1805. Their children, born between 1830 and 1842, were Calvin, son F.H., Sarah Margaret, William, Albert B., Mary, and son Anann who was born in 1842. His second wife, Susan Craig was born about 1820 in Pennsylvania. They had a son, Joseph Craig Rankin, 1849-1917. [1]

(Craig), 11, in school. All members of the household were born in Pennsylvania (ages of family members seem inaccurate). On a nearby property was another Rankin family: J.H Rankin, 25, his wife Lavinia, 25, and their two children. [5]

Joseph A. Rankin died on 20 May 1879. He is buried at New Rehoboth Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Strattanville, PA. His father, Joseph A. Steen Rankin (1774-1839) and his father’s brother Benjamin Rankin (1772-1845) came to America from Ireland, arriving in Boston on 18 June 1798. They married the Johnston sisters, Elizabeth and Letticie. In 1802, they moved to PA. In 1805, they bought 100 acres in Clarion County, PA. Joseph A. Steen Rankin was founder and ruling elder of 1st Seceder Church in Rimersburg. In 1829 he was elected associate judge. He served one term in the PA Legislature, and was Armstrong County Commissioner. Other children: James, 1803-1863, and Benjamin J., 1823-1889. Per FindAGrave 141549719.
