Johannson “Johnson” or “John” Rankine/Rankin was born in 1835 in Hanover or Bavaria, Germany, the son of Johann and Mary Rankin, the first of their six children. Johnson married Agnes Struthers. They had four children, all born in Iowa. A possible second wife: Agnes M. Viacole (no sourced material for second marriage). [1] Note: from the census records below, it appears that his father was widowed by 1850, and had married Mary before 1860.
In 1850, the Rankin family lived in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. The family included John Rankin, 40, a brick maker, who could not read or write; Johnson Rankin, 18, a brick maker; Hiram Rankin, 14; Henry Rankin, 12; and Eliza Henchen, 28. All were born in Germany. [2]
In 1860, the Rankins lived in Keokuk, Lee, Iowa. All members of the family were born in Prussia, except for the three youngest children who were born in Ohio. The household included John Rankin, 47, a brick maker; Mary, 38; Johnson, 25; Evan, 22; Henry, 20; John, 5; Frederick, 3; and Betsy, 2. [3]
In 870, the Rankins lived in Keokuk, Lee, Iowa. The household included Johnson Rankin, 36, a brick manufacturer, born in Prussia, a U.S. citizen, with $1500 in personal estate; his wife, Agnes, 25, b. Iowa; and their daughter, Jessie, six months, b. May 1870 in Iowa. [4]
In 1880, the Rankin family lived in Keokuk, Lee, Iowa. The family included Johnson Rankin, 46, born in Bavaria, a brick maker; Agnes, 32, b. Ohio; Jessie, 12, b. Iowa, in school; Albert, 7, b. Iowa, in school; and Lucy, 3, b. Iowa. [5]
Private Johnson Rankin, born in Hanover, Germany in 1832, and later moved to the United States. Rankin served the Union during the Civil War. He enlisted in Company C, 3rd Iowa Cavalry on 29 August 1861. He served three years, and was mustered out on 19 September 1864. Rankin is buried at Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, Iowa. [6] [7]
