Biography
George Whitfield Rankin was about 1873 in Iredell, North Carolina, the son of George Lee Rankin and Margaret R. Mills.
In 1880, the Rankin family lived on their farm in Davidson Township, Iredell, North Carolina. The family included G.L. Rankin, 46, a farmer; his wife Margaret Rankin, 40, who suffered with “congestion of liver”; their children, their twins, boy AM, 10, and girl MV, 10, both in school; boys, JL, 7, and GL (George Whitfield Rankin), 5; and daughter, Martha, 3. All members of the family were born in North Carolina, as were their parents.[1]
George Whitfield Rankin was the fourth of six siblings. He married Sarah Jane Parker on 16 August 1896 in Coddle Creek Township, Iredell, North Carolina. They both resided in Iredell County, NC. Mr. T.L. Triplett, a Methodist minister, officiated. Witness to the marriage were R.H. Templeton and R.S. Templeton. George and Sarah went on to have (at least) seven children, born between 1897 and 1917.
In 1900, the Rankin family lived on a rented farm in Coddle Creek Township, Iredell, North Carolina. The family included George Rankin, 26, b. Sept. 1874 in NC (parents b. NC), a farmer; his wife of three years, and their two children, all born in NC. In 1910, they lived on their rented farm in Fallstown, Iredell, NC. George Rankin, 35, was a farmer. He lived with his wife of 13 years, Sarah Jane, 33, who had had six children, all living; and their six children. In 1930, they lived on their farm in Fallstown. They owned their farm, valued at $2500. The household included George W. Rankin, 55, a farmer; his wife, Sara, 53; their two single daughters; and married son, Charles, and his wife. In 1940, the Rankins lived in Berrenger Township, Iredell, North Carolina. They owned their farm, valued at $1000, and they had lived there for at least five years. The family included George W. Rankin, 65, a farmer, who had completed the fifth grade; his wife, Sara Jane Rankin, 63, who completed the seventh grade; and their married daughter, Edna Gilland, 33, completed the tenth grade, a seamstress at a shirt mill. George Whitfield Rankin, 68, a Troutman, NC resident, a married farmer, died on 11 September 1874 in Troutman, Iredell, North Carolina, and is buried there at (New) Perth Cemetery. He was born in Iredell County in 1873, the son of Lee Rankin and Martha Mills. He was the husband of Sarah J. Parker. [5]
The Greensboro Daily News obituary reported that George W. Rankin, 69, passed away on 21 December 1942 [in Greensboro (error)]. [6]
George Whitfield Rankin, 1874-1942, is buried at New Perth Cemetery, Troutman, North Carolina with his wife, three of their children, and a brother, Aaron M. Rankin. He was the son of George LeRoy Rankin and Margaret Ruth Mills.
