Biography

Calvin is the son of Della (Fleming) and Joseph Craig Rankin. In 1900, they lived in Clarion Township, Strattanville, Clarion, Pennsylvania. The household included (Joseph) Craig, 51, a stock drover who owned their farm free and clear; and his wife Della, 44. They had been married 27 years and had had nine children, all living. Also living with them were their seven children: Mary, 24, employed as a servant; Bessie, 19; John, 16; Nannie, 14; Calvin, 11; Elwood, 8; and William, 3. John, Nannie, Calvin and Elwood were all in school. All members of the household were born in Pennsylvania, as were the parents of Craig and Della. ^[1]

In 1910, the Rankins lived on their farm on Greenville Road in Clarion, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. They owned their farm without a mortgage. All members of the household were born in Pennsylvania (as were their parents), and all could read and write. The family included J. Craig Rankin, 61, a farmer; his wife of 39 years, Arabella, 53, who had had nine children, all of whom were living; their children, John, 26; Nannie, 23; Calvin, 20; Elwood, 16, in school; and William, 12, in school.^[2]

In 1920, the Rankin family lived in Clarion County, Pennsylvania. The family included John N. Rankin, 36, a farmer, who owned their farm without a mortgage; his mother, Arazella, 63, a widow; and his brothers, Joseph C. (Calvin), 29, a gas co. laborer; and William D., 22, a rubber factory laborer. All were born in Pennsylvania. ^[3]
