Biography

Thomas Braxton Rankin was born 24 August 1850, the son of Ethelbert Rankin and Mary Jane Cason. Thomas married Venola Modeste Rutledge on 5 January 1875 in Lee, Mississippi. They had six children. ^[1]

In 1860, the Rankin family lived in Itawamba, Mississippi. The household included Ethelbert Rankin, 35, born in South Carolina, a wagon maker, with $800 in real estate and $440 in personal estate; his wife Mary, 25, born in SC; their children, all born in Mississippi, Thomas, 10; John, 6; Laura, 4; and Amelia, 2.^[2]

In 1870, the Rankin family lived in Itawamba, Mississippi. The family included Ethelbert Rankin, 46, a carpenter, with $1200 in real estate and $200 in personal estate; his wife Mary, 36; their children, all born in Mississippi, Thomas, 19, a farm laborer; John, 16, farm laborer; Laura, 13; Amelia, 11; and Robert, 8.^[3]

T.B. Rankin and V.M. Rutledge were married on 5 January 1875 in Lee County, Mississippi.^[4]

In 1880, the Rankin family lived in Itawamba, Mississippi. The household included T. B. Rankin, 29, born in Mississippi (parents b. SC), in farming; his wife, Venola M., 27, born in Arkansas (father b. VA; mother b. MS); their children, all born in Mississippi, Eugenia, 4; Ethelbert, 3; William S., 2; and Braxton, one month old.^[5]

In 1920, Thomas lived with his son Ethelbert and his family on their farm on Belden Road, Tupelo, Lee, Mississippi. All members of the household were born in Mississippi. The household included Ethelbert R. Rankin, 43, a farmer, who owned their property with a mortgage; his wife Ida L., 25; their children, Thomas B., 8, in school; Venola O., 6, in school; Elkin R., 4; and Vera N, an infant. Also, Thomas B. Rankin, 69, widowed, a school teacher.^[6]

In 1930, they lived in Lee County, Mississippi. The household included E.R. Rankin, 53, an automobile salesman; his wife Ida, 35, seamstress in a taylor shop; their children, (Thomas) Burdine, 18; Venola, 16; Elkin, 14; and Vera N., 11. And, Thomas B. Rankin, 79; and Sam J. Winders, 71, a lodger.^[7]

Thomas Braxton Rankin was born 24 August 1850, Lee, Mississippi. He died on 25 June 1930, aged 79, in Tupelo, Lee, Mississippi, and is buried with his wife Modeste at Wiygul Cemetery, itawamba, Mississippi. ^[8]
