Biography

William Rankin and Sarah Mercer were married on 2 October 1834 in Jefferson, Ohio. Justice of the Peace of Jefferson County, J. Watson, officiated.[1][2]

In 1850, the Rankin family lived in Vermont, Fulton, Illinois. The family included William Rankin, 43, born in Pennsylvania, a farmer; his wife, Sarah, 37, born in PA; their children, born in Ohio, except as noted, John, 14, in school; Martha, 10, in school; Alice A., 7; Rhodes, 3, born in Illinois; and Rebecca, an infant, born in Illinois.[3]

In 1860, the Rankin family lived on their farm in Vermont Township, Fulton, Illinois. The family included William Rankin, 54, a farmer, with $4000 in real estate and $600 in personal estate; his wife, Sarah, 46; their children, Martha, 20, born in Ohio; Alice A., 15, b. Ohio, in school; Rhodes, 11, b. Illinois, in school; Rebecca, 10, b. IL, in school; and Sarah J., 2, b. IL.[4]

In 1870, the Rankins lived in Vermont, Illinois. The household included William Rankin, 64, a farmer, with $1600 in real estate and $500 in personal estate; his wife, Sarah, 56; their children, all born in Illinois, Rhodes, 21, a day laborer; Rebecca, 19; and Sarah J., 13, in school. Also living with them were Charles Hart, 13, in school; and Eliza Henry, 16, a domestic servant.[5]

William Rankin, 1806-1879 (72-73), is buried with his wife, Sarah and other family at Vermont Cemetery, Vermont, Illinois.[6]
