Marion was born in 1848 in Massachusetts, the daughter of Hiram Rankin and Betsey P. Dunbar. Marion Elizabeth Rankin married Egbert Eugene Hakes. They had at least three children. The Hales family lived in Hallock Township, Peoria County, Illinois (1900, 1910, and 1920 Census records). Marian passed away, aged 74, in 1922. In 1880, the Hakes family lived in Hallock Township, Peoria, Illinois. The family included Egbert E. Hakes, 32, a farmer; wife, Marian E., 31, born in Massachusetts (parents b. MA); children, Maggie M., 6; and Herbert E., 4, both born in Illinois. [2]
Marian E. Hakes, 74, died at 1924 Farwell Ave., Chicago, Cook, Illinois on 9 December 1922. She was born 9 September 1874 in Maryland (MA), the daughter of Hiram Rankin and Betsey Dunbar. Marian was the widow of Eugene Hakes. The informant to her death was (her daughter) Maggie Brown. [3]
“Marian E. Hakes was born at Belchertown, Mass., September 9, 1848, and passed away at the home of her daughter, 1924 Farwell Avenue, Chicago, Ill., December 9, 1922.
She was one of five children born to Hiram and Betsy Rankin. When about eleven years of age she accompanied her parents to Southampton, Peoria County, Ill., where they settled. In that vicinity she lived for a period of sixty-three years.
On March 24, 1870, she and Egbert E. Hakes were united in marriage and spent over fifty years happily together. About the time of her marriage she was baptized and joined the West Hallock Seventh Day Baptist Church. Having taught school at an early age she was ever interested in religious and educational affairs, being especially active as a Sabbath school teacher.
Two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Hakes, of Peoria, Ill., and Mrs. Cora Lyon, of Edelstein, Ill., three children, Herbert E. Hakes, of Edelstein, Ill.; Maggie M. Brown, of Chicago, Ill., and Geneva E. Hummel, of Boulder, Colo., also four grandchildren are left to revere her memory.
Farewell services were conducted in the West Hallock, Ill., church on December 13, by Rev. Mr. Acheson, a neighboring pastor, who appropriately quoted the following text: "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord; that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.
