Biography

Isabella Jane Rankin, 1818-1905, was born in Kentucky, the daughter of Rev. John T. Rankin and Jean G. Lowry. Isabella married Wilson S. Humphreys in Ripley, Ohio, on 28 September 1840. They had two children: Eliza Ann, 1845 Ripley, Ohio - 1924; and John W., born 1848, Ohio. [1]

In 1850, the Humphreys lived in Union Township, Ripley, Brown, Ohio. The family included Wilson Humphreys, 31, born in Ohio, a farmer, with $3000 in real estate; his wife, Isabell J., 31, b. Kentucky; their children, both born in Ohio, Eliza Ann, 5; and John W., 2; William R. Lowry, 35, b. Tennessee, a carpenter, with $1300 in real estate; Theopoles Lowry, 8, b. Ohio; and Emery Stallcock, 17, b. Ohio. [2]

In 1870, the Humphreys family lived in Elizabeth Township, Lawrence, Ohio. The family included Wilson Humphreys, the family included Wilson Humphreys, 52, born in Ohio, a farmer/manager, with $800 in personal estate; his wife, Isabella, 52; and their son, John, 21, born in Ohio, an invalid. [3]

Wilson and Isabella’s son, John William Humphreys, single, 23, died as the result of an accident on 14 June 1871 in Elizabeth Township, Lawrence County, Ohio. He was born in 1848 in Brown County, Ohio. [4]

In 1880, Wilson and Isabella Humphreys lived with their daughter Eliza Ann Gray and her family at the Gray’s home in 120 S. 6th St., Ironton, Upper Township, Lawrence, Ohio. The household included George N. Gray, 42, born in Pennsylvania, a finance manager; his wife, Eliza Ann Gray, 35, born in Ohio; their children, all born in Ohio, and all in school, John, 12; Charles, 11; George, 7; and Emma, 5; Eliza Ann’s parents, Wilson Humphreys, 61, b. Ohio, not employed; and Isabella Humphreys, 61, b. Kentucky; and Ricka Long, 18, b. Germany, a servant. [5]

In 1900, Isabella Humphreys lived with her daughter, Emma and her family at 102 S. 6th St., upper Township, Ironton, Lawrence, Ohio. The household included George Gray, 62, born in Ohio, a real estate agent, who owned their house without a mortgage; his wife of 33 years, Emma M., 54, who had had four children, three of whom were living; an aunt, Amanda D. Humphreys, 81; Emma’s mother, Isabella Humphreys, 82, a widow, born in June 1818; Rickey Longe, 22, born in Germany, a servant; and George and Emma’s children 27 and 25. [6]

Isabella Jane (Rankin) Humphreys, 87, died on 17 August 1905, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. George N. Gray, Ironton, Ohio, where she had lived since 1876. Isabella is buried with her husband at Woodland Cemetery, Ironton, Ohio. [7] Also buried there is her daughter, Eliza Ann Gray and her husband, CoL. George Noah Gray, 1838-1907, Civil War veteran, 53rd Ohio Infantry. They lived at 506 S. Sixth St., Ironton, Ohio.
