Hugh Rankin was born in 1825 (in Ireland). He married Bessie Courtney in 1847 in New York. They had at least three children: William E., born 1849 NY; Jenny, 1850 NY; and Pauline, 1858, Connecticut. [1] NOTE: this record states that Hugh and Bessie were born in NY. They were actually both born in Ireland, per Census data. This family tree collection contains several marriage records for their children, William E.,and Jenny.

The family included High Rankin, 34, born in Ireland, a carriage builder, with $100 in personal estate; his wife, Eliza, 28, born in Ireland; their children, all born in Connecticut, except as noted: William E., 14, born in NY; Eliza (Lizzie) A., 12, b. NY; Jane, 8?; James, 8; Lewis N., 4; and Pauline, 2. Also living with them was Bridget McCabe, 23, b. Ireland.[4]

Hugh Rankin and his wife Bessie Courtney are mentioned in the marriage record of their son, William E. Rankin, 21, who married Mary Melissa Grant, 20, on 7 April 1867 in Manhattan, New York City, New York. [5]

In 1870, the Rankin family lived in New York City, New York. The household included Hugh Rankin, 45, born in Ireland, a painter, with $600 in personal estate; his wife, Eliza, 43, b. Ireland; their children, all born in Connecticut, except as noted: Lizzie, 22; Jane, 19; James, 16, a grocery clerk; Lewis, 13, in school; Pauline, 11, in school; and William, 22, b. NY, a dry goods clerk; and his wife, Mary, 25, b. NY.[6]NOTE: William Rankin and his wife Mary were also enumerated in another household in NYC the 1870 Census (refer to their profiles for details)
