Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Ann (Ransone) Gatewood was a Virginia colonist.

Uncertain Origin

Ann was born about 1720. This birth date is estimated, based on the birth date proposed by Carol Gothberg.

Acording to Carol Gothberg, Ann may have been the daughter of Richard Ransom/Ransone of Gloucester County.[1]

This profile currently reports that Ann was a daughter of Peter Ransone and Dorothy North (without evidence or source). Another issue is the dates. Dorothy (North) is estimated to have been born c. 1669, and William Gatewood's profile reports he was born in 1724. If Ann was born c. 1720, her mother would have been 51 years old at her birth, not impossible but unusual, especially in the 18th C.

Marriages

Ann Ransone married twice.

Ransom Boswell and his wife, Mary, sold to William Gatewood's brother, Peter Gatewood of Spotsylvania Co., on 3 Oct 1752, 100 acres for £40.[1]

Death and Legacy

She passed away about 1780 to 1785 and was buried in Virginia.[2]

Research Notes

The 1987 work of Carol Gothberg does not mention a second marriage (for both) between William Gateway and Ann (Ransone) Boswell.[4]

Ann was born in 1710. She passed away in 1778. [5]

Ransom-1004 and Ransone-29 appear to represent the same person because: same husband and dates.....I got the spelling of the last name incorrect

Question Ann's parents. Do we have any appropriate sources for them? Thanks!

Ransom-256 and Ransone-29 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, parents, birth date, and marriage (note the current last name on Ransone-29).

The spelling of this last name varied a lot, but more often was spelled "Ransone" or "Ranson" and rarely "Ransome" The place most often seen with the spelling "Ransom" is data bases online, such as Ancestry Trees and Ancestral Files.

For this reason, have proposed the merge into "Ransone" spelling. Please feel free to comment, question, or disagree (with source(s) or course). Thanks!
