James Ranson was born in about 1825 in Eccleston, Lancashire. He is presumed to have been the son of James Ranson and Ann (Robinson) Ranson, who he was living with in 1841.
By June 6th 1841, the family were living in Eccleston, Lancashire; James was working as a publican, and his presumed sons John, Thomas and James were wheelwrights.
James married Ellen (Addison) Pickavance in 1849, in a registrar-attended ceremony in Prescot district.
