Peter Rasmussen was the son of Nis Rasmussen. Peter was the first to take the surname Nissen after "the law" was passed that everyone in the same family have the same surname. He was born in Denmark.
Peter Nissen Rasmussen was born 17 April 1783 in Halderslev, Denmark. Halderslev is located a short distance northwest of Flensburg, Germany (which used to be a part of Denmark) and died there 17 April 1855. According to official records, Peter was a ``carter/waggoneer´´ by occupation. In actuality, Peter ran a bakery and inn from his home located at Slotsgade 2, Haderslev, Denmark. Peter married Marta Jensen Outzen Dinsen on12 May 1810 in Denmark. Peter and Marta had six children (Johanne Saffira Pedersdatter (born 1805), Matilda Maria Pedersdatter (1807-1807), Rasmus Dinsen Nissen (born 1809), Jens Nissen (1812-1892) and Marta Nissen (our descendent (1821-1865).
According to a story posted on Ancestry.com by descendants of Jens Nissen, Peter Nissen Rasmussen was the first member of his family to take the surname ``Nissen´´ after the Danish ``law´´ was passed which required that everyone in the same family have the same surname.
Peter Nissen was an alcoholic and is on record as being very abusive to his son, Jens. Jens immigrated to America following the 1821 death of his mother (Marta Dinsen) whom he loved very much and described as ``an angel.´´ Jens remained the rest of his life in Florida.
Following the death of his wife, Marta, Peter Nissen married or began living with another woman. We also understand that towards the end of his life, Peter´s family was so ashamed of his alcoholism and abusive ways, that he was confined to a castle near his home and lived there until his death on 17 April 1855.
