Sarah Ratcliff was born on June 26, 1835 in Ohio.^[1] She was the daughter of Abner Ratcliff and Elizabeth Terrell.

She married Benjamin Sunderland Dunkin on October 14, 1853 in Carroll Coungy, Indiana.^[2] They had 8 children.
