Elizabeth Ratcliffe was born on 3 April 1829 in Burtonwood, Lancashire, England, the daughter of Thomas Ratcliffe and Martha Bailey.[1]
She was baptised on 26 April 1829 in Burtonwood. Her father was a cordwainer. [2]
Her father died and her mother remarried.
In 1841 Elizabeth aged 12, (recorded under her stepfather's surname of Bate) was living with her mother, stepfather and 3 siblings in Chapel Lane, Sankey on the outskirts of Warrington, Lancashire. Her step-father was a publican. [3]
Aged 22, she was still living with her family in Chapel Lane in 1851. [1]
