Biography

R.P. Raulston said he never had a dollar in the bank, never borrowed a dollar. Voted in 17 Presidential Elections, always Republican, always at the same voting pole in Dardanelle, AR.

Memories from people in Wildcat Hollow

R. P. Raulston kept bees and had a blacksmith shop out back. When people got sick or hurt, they came to him because he had studied medical books. They used the stars to give medicine by. R. P. knew all about the moon and constellations, and used to point them out to the grandchildren. He loved music and books. Usually the school teachers for Wildcat Hollow stayed at his house.[5] Robert P. was a farmer who hunted for his meat. Robert P. Raulston was a wood craftsman and farmer, belonged to the Church of Christ, and was approximately 6 feet tall, 170 pounds, and dark complexion. [46]

Per Marjorie Hawkins www.ancestry.com/facts/hawkins-family-history “My granddaddy [R.P.] nicknamed me Jack. Everyone in Arkansas called me Jack when I was small, until we left Arkansas.”

I was born before Grandpa Roulston died but I never met him that I know about. What I am saying about the kind of man he was I heard from others. He must have been an outstanding man, I never met anyone who did know him who didn't like, admire & respect him. That included his children, their mates and their descendents.

My Dad, my Aunt Pearl, my Aunt Rena, Uncle Alvin, Uncle Aldon, Bill Wofford, J. C. & Judy Gentry all adored him. The word most often used to describe him was "gentleman." He is said to have been gentle & kind and very compassionate. My Dad said he was intelligent and fair, he respected and listened to other people, including children.

Aunt Rena said that as the table was being set for a large group of family they ran out of plates and set out tin pans for the children. Rena said her Grandpa quietly moved a tin pie plate for his place too. When the daughters quickly said "oh, no Dad, you need a plate." Rena said he smiled and said, "I think I will just eat out of the same things the children are eating out of." That sounds like my own Dad and it touched me.

Rena also noticed something else that was different than most people of that time. When they killed a hog they often hired some black men to come and help out, it was a long, hard job. When dinner (the middle meal) was set the hired hands started away from the table, as was the custom of that time and place. Grandpa Roulston told them to come back, saying "we worked side by side, we can eat side by side." She had admired that.

He must have been a man who lived by his own moral standards.

Aunt Matt Roulston Bowman wrote this for her Dad, Robert Patton Roulston. Aunt Lucille, widow of Great Uncle Bob Roulston, copied it onto the back of a family sheet she completed and sent to me many years ago, back in the 1970's. She wrote small but almost ran out of space.

Grandpa Rob Roulston told Aunt Matt what to write for him.

The Roulston name is Irish. My Great Grandfather was a full blooded Irishman. My Great Grandmother was a full blooded Scotchman. So my Grandfather was half Scotch & half Irish. He was born in 1802, died 1852. My Fathers name was James Cross Roulston, was born 1823, June 3rd, died Feb 2nd, 1877.

My Mother was Eliza Jane Russell, born Nov 23, 1829, died Oct 29, 1877. My Father & Mother married July 29, 1849, sons & daughters born to them, Linnie pearl, June 1, 1850, Robert Patton, Jan 8, 1852, Martha Comfort, April 24, 1854, John S Roulston Dec 23, 1856, died July 25, 1857, Henry Clay Roulston, Sep 28, 1858.

Nancy Melvina White Roulston, born Nov 1, 1861 in Hopkins Co., TX. R. P. Roulston & Nancy M. White was married Nov 22, 1877. Children born Eliza Jane, James Richmond, Guy Luther, Maggie Florence, Mattie Comfort, William Robert, John Cecil, Linnie Pearl, Nettie Manila & 2 infant sons who died.

R.P. was living at this writing, Oct 27, 1939. He is 87 years old. He has 8 children living, 50 grandchildren & 41 great grandchildren.

He said, "the first thing he ever remembers doing was holding a hank of thread on his wrists while his great grandmother wound the ball. It was knitting thread."

The first money he ever earned was a dime. He picked up a barrel full of chips for Mrs. Williams of Dardanelle, AR. She was M. L. Davis' Mother. He was 7 years old.

R. P. was never arrested in his life or paid a fine. Always paid his taxes since he was 21 years old. Commenced to work road when he was 18, worked until he was 45, was sick & missed one time. The hands gave him his time. He never was sued or sued anyone. Never gave but 2 mortgages in his life. Never gave them to get in debt but to get out of debt and did so.

Never borrowed a dollar from the Bank. Never had a shoe shine. Always used taller to shine his shoes. Was in a barber chair twice.

R.P. used to hunt a little, killed 19 deer that he got. Don't know how many he killed and didn't get. Killed lots of turkeys. Found Bee trees. Caught Coons. Found as many as 3 up one tree. Killed 2 wolves and a lot of squirrels & pole cats. Had lots of fun. Was never under the influence of whiskey but twice, not touched a drop of intoxicating drink in 35 years. Never smoked a cigar or chewed tobacco. 65 years, Once a man, twice a child. He is in his 2nd childhood now. Not got a tooth. Climbs up the door steps like a child. Falls down and gets up again like a child. From child to child he hasn't forgot church.
