James was born about 1829 (1886 census), in Wisconsin, in what was then Michigan Territory. (1900 census)
In land records his Hocąk name is given as AH-MA-CHO-HUTTE-KAW (BLM 1893) , which is for Aną̄́cuxĕtega, "Big Armful", a Bear Clan name referencing how bears hug a tree when climbing it. The name derives from a, "arm"; ną̄cú, "to carry an armload of something (especially wood)"; xĕte, "big, large"; and -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names.
James married Eagle Woman.
