Birth

James was born about 1829 (1886 census), in Wisconsin, in what was then Michigan Territory. (1900 census)

Name

In land records his Hocąk name is given as AH-MA-CHO-HUTTE-KAW (BLM 1893) , which is for Aną̄́cuxĕtega, "Big Armful", a Bear Clan name referencing how bears hug a tree when climbing it. The name derives from a, "arm"; ną̄cú, "to carry an armload of something (especially wood)"; xĕte, "big, large"; and -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names.

Marriage

James married Eagle Woman.

Land

James was granted 160 acres of land on the Winnebago Reservation in Thurston County, Nebraska, T026N - R008E, Section 1, E½ SW¼ (42.252831, -96.499558) and Section 2, W½ SW¼ (42.252952, -96.474760). (BLM 1893)
