Biography

Birth

Charles was born in 1889. His mother was Sallie English Baker-Priest-Rave. It is not clear who his father was. He took the surname of John Rave, but in the 1900 Federal census, he was said to be John Rave's step-son, although the veracity of this statement is uncertain. If true, then it would be most likely that he is the natural son of William Baker.

Names

He is first known by his birth name, Kųnųgá, "First Son". (1893 census)

In the 1898 census, he is known only as Wank-cho-ne-kaw, which is for Wą̄kcṓnįga, "First Man (Leader)", from wą̄k, "man"; cṓnį, "first", and -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names. Since every clan has a chief, this name could be found in either moiety.

By at least 1910, he is known by the Anglo name "Charles".

Marriages

The 1917 census records that he is married to Lucinda Cobb (b. 1880), an Eastern Cherokee from South Carolina. In 1929, Charles' wife is known as "Lavinia Cornsilk" (b. 1889) and is found on the North Carolina Cherokee roll. The 1934 and 1937 censuses name his wife as Martha Cornsilk (b. 7 March 1885).

Children

Charles and Lucinda had the following children:

Name Birth Census (Agency)
Frances (female) 28 October 1911 1916 (NE), 1920 (NE), 1929 (NE)
Maurice W. 22 February 1913 1934 (NC), 1937 (NC)
Wilma A. 3 March 1915 1916 (NE), 1918 (NE), 1920 (NE), 1934 (NC), 1937 (NC)
Albert H. 1916 1918 (NE), 1920 (NE)
Alberta 1 November 1917 1934 (NE), 1937 (NE)
Winona 9 February 1925 1929 (NE), 1934 (NE), 1937 (NE)
Gerald Frances 9 December 1928 1929 (NE)

Frances is incorrectly identified as a male in the 1929 census. Gerald may have been the son of Lavinia Cornsilk.

Death

He was still alive at the last Indian census of 1937, where he is recorded in both Nebraska and North Carolina.
