[6] RIWAKA. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Yet another of the old Expedition men in the person of Thomas Rowling has passed into the eternal silence, and was buried on June 22nd in the Riwaka Cemetery, being followed to the grave by about two hundred people, almost all of whom were personally acquainted with him in his life time. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Mr Harker, who delivered a short impressive, and most appropriate address. The deceased having lived and died a good Oddfellow, the service of the Order was read at the grave, and at its termination the brothers, who were present in full force, and who had accompanied the cortege in procession, dropped the sprigs of thyme on the coffin as their last mark of esteem for the departed. He came to Nelson in the Will Watch in 1841, and though a tradesman, soon settled down on the land, and was ever a most intelligent and industrious farmer. For some time previous to his death, which occurred at the age of 75, he had been in excellent health, though his friends had been warned by his medical adviser Dr. Dunn, that he might drop dead at any moment and such indeed it proved, as on the morning of the 20th, having eaten a hearty breakfast and being about to commence shaving, he suddenly and without any premonitory symptom fell forward dead. He was preceded some years by his first wife, but leaves a second, and also four sons and two daughters, and forty grandchildren. During his long life he had seldom ailed, and though somewhat infirm of late, the news of his death created much surprise. He was of the tough old Cornish stock, characteristically English in his ways, of the stuff that good colonists (of which he was one) are made.
