Biography

Middlesex (historic flag)
Barbara (Rawlins) Redgard was born in Middlesex, England.
Barbara was born around 1834 in London, England. At the time of the 1841 census she lived at Pump Court, Perkins' Rents, in Westminster with her parents, George Rawlins and Mary Cull.[1] By 1851 Barbara lived on Coal Pit Lane, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, with her father.[2]

She married John Redgard at St Stephen's church, Sneinton, Nottinghamshire, on 21 April 1851.[3] Their son, William, was baptised at Stepney St Dunstan and All Saints, Tower Hamlets, London, on 6 November 1853. At the time of the baptism, John was a smith and the family lived at 17 Ticket (?) Street.[4]

The Redgards had returned to Nottingham by 1856, when their daughter, Mary Ann, was baptised at Christ Church, Radford, on 8 July.[5]

In 1861 John, aged 27, worked as a framesmith and the family lived at Highurst Street in Radford. Barbara was also 27; their children were son William (aged seven, born in London) and daughters Mary Ann (seven, born in Nottingham) and Louisa (two, born in Nottingham).[6][7]

John died in 1865 at the age of 35.[8] After her husband's death, Barbara went on to have two more children: Arthur in 1870[9] and Violet in 1872.[10]

In 1871 Barbara worked as a "hair net hand" and lived at 8 Newcastle Court with her five children (three of whom were also working) and two boarders, Elijah Bartlam and his son John.[11] The household remained the same 10 years later, when Barbara was an annuitant.[12]

She lived with her daughter Violet at Fyne Street, Nottingham, in 1891. Both worked as lace hands.[13][14]

Barbara died in 1900 at the age of 66.[15]

Research notes

It seems possible that Elijah Bartlam could have been the father of Barbara's two youngest children. Fuller-8857 20:32, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
