Nora Mae Ray was a younger daughter of George Washington and Saphronia Fults Ray, born in Hopkins Co., Texas near the community of Saltillo. Her birth date is usually given as 1889 as on her death record in 1942; however her sister Ursula was born in January 1889, and it is more likely the date is 1887. She had six sisters and two brothers. There is a first marriage recorded for her in 1905 at age 16 (or 18) to C. E. Pittman; C. Pittman died unexpectedly in 1906.
Nora Mae married Walter William Arnold in December 1907 at age 18 (or 20); he was a widower, age 36, with four young children. Nora and Walter had one son of their own, Ray Arnold, born in 1909. Nora was a step-mother to the older children as well as raising her own son. Nora and Walter later lived in Texarkana, Texas. Nora died in 1942 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Texarkana.
