Samuel Ray (Ray-5972) = Samuel "Smallwood" Ray (Ray-5972) = father of William Ray (Ray-5972).

In the 1860 Census he is listed as "Wood" Ray at Crawford TWP, Buchanan Co, MO 1870 Census, Samuel V. Ray, Washington TWP, Buchanan Co, MO 1880 Census, S.V. Ray, Ruby City, Gunnison, Colorado 1890 Census, not found, probably in Kansas 1900 Census, S.V. Ray, Banner & Excelsior Townships, Kingfisher, Oklahoma Territory 1910 Census, Smallwood Ray, at Banner, Kingfisher, Oklahoma Irene died in 1912 at Lucerne, Sheridan Co, KS. Believe that Smallwood lived beyond this, but not to 1920.
