WILLIAM RAYMER, 1836-1911

William Raymer was the second son of John Raymer, Master Mariner, and Rebecca (Bradbrook), and nephew of the George Raymer, 1823-1892, ancestor of the New South Wales branch. He arrived in Australia, probably at Melbourne but research has not yet discovered whether as passenger or crew nor on what ship. In 1858 he married Anne Mulholland who had sailed from Plymouth, United Kingdom, on the Ocean Monarch on 27th November 1855, arriving in Melbourne in June 1856. As William had been baptised on 25th September at St Peter's (Anglican) church in Ipswich and Anne who was born in Louth, Ireland was a Roman Catholic, they were married at the chapel of St Marie on 22nd August 1858, the ceremony taking place in the vestry as they were of mixed faiths.

William was a shunter for the Hudsons Bay Railway, later Victorian Railways and lost an arm in a shunting accident.' In the Index for 19th Century Employees he was listed as No. 5989, appointed 27th March 1867, grade: labourer, branch: locomotive. His employment appears to have ceased between January 1893 and December 1895. The Raymer Family has mainly lived and worked in the Williamstown area up until the present generation. They first lived in Thompson Street, Hammer Street, Union Street, Douglas Parade, Williamstown. There was over 16 families of Raymer in the 1800's living there. There are 23 Raymer's buried in Williamstown Cemetery, one dates back to 1870, others up until 1973. A lot of the' graves are full, (ie: five bodies in each grave). When you get back to the back of this small history paper, you will see a record of who is buried there.
