Caleb was born in 1860 or 1862, son of Capt. John G. Read and Mary J. Tower.[1] He was himself a sea captain in Rockport, as noted in the Saint John Daily Sun:[2]
He sailed for the Sumner Company of Moncton. in 1901 he had the first command of the Ethel B Sumner, a coastal trader built in Harvey, Albert County. The vessel was wrecked, under the command of another, in 1912, under mysterious circumstances.[3] In 1908, a portion of his land at Pecks Cove, Rockport, was purchased by the Government of Canada for a new lighthouse.[4] After retiring, he moved to Weldon Street in Moncton. Interred in Elmwood Cemetery.[5]
He shows up in the 1861, 71 and 81 Sackville censuses. His birth record shows YOB only of 1860. His death record gives 1862. Son Sumner lived in Flushing NY.
