Jacob Read served as an officer with the marine attachment aboard the frigate Cumberland during the Mexican-American War. He was noted as having served with Company "B" on July 2, 1847. Read resigned from the U.S. Marine Corps on February 27, 1861, with it being accepted the following day.
During the American Civil War, he served as a captain within the C.S. Marine Corps from May 21, 1861 until his dismissal on February 1, 1863. Read accepted a position as a captain with the 1st Georgia Regulars until his death in 1864.
