Ellinor was born on 12 September 1850 at Benares (also known as Varanasi), India. She is the daughter of Edward Reade and Eliza Burnard who married in India in 1838. She was baptised on 8 November 1850 at Agra, India[1]
Ellinor's family moved from India to England, where her mother died in 1857, registered at Brighton, Sussex. Ellinor was 7 years old.
At the 1861 census the family home is recorded at Ipsden House, Ipsden, Oxfordshire, Ipsden being where Ellinor's father was born. Details listed - father Edward A Reade (widow, 54, Justice of Peace for Oxfordshire, born Oxfordshire), Ellinor E Reade (10, scholar, born Benares, India), sister Lucy E Reade (8, scholar, born Agra, India) and sister Margaret E Reade (5, scholar, bron Agra, India). Also present is a visitor, Charlotte Burnard (unmarried, 63), possibly a sister of Ellinor's mother? Six resident servants are recorded - housekeeper, parlour maid, nursery maid, kitchen maid, house maid and lady's maid.
At the 1871 census Ellinor Edward Reade (20) is recorded as staying with her cousin Emily Sopha Stokes at The Vicarage, Goring, Oxfordshire, nearby to Ipsden. Emily's husband, who was absent, must have been the vicar at Goring.
On 2 July 1872 Ellinor Edward Reade (spinster) married Francis Edward Hedges (bachelor, solicitor) at St Mary's chapel, Ipsden, Oxfordshire. The church marriage register records Francis as of Newnham Murren (3 miles from Ipsden), and Ellinor as of Ipsden. Francis' father is confirmed as Charles Hedges, solicitor, and Ellinor's father is confirmed as Edward Auderdon Reade, Esquire, C.B. The civil registration of the marriage was at Henley, Oxfordshire, in the third quarter of 1872.
By the 1881 census Ellinor is already the mother of at least six children. The family is found at Winterbrook, Cholsey, by Wallingford, Berkshire. Details listed - husband Francis E Hedges (34, solicitor, born Wallingford), Ellinor E Hedges (30, born Benares, India), daughter Constance Hedges (7, born Cholsey), son Francis R Hedges (5, born Cholsey), daughter Alice M Hedges (3, born Cholsey), son Gerald B Hedges (1, born Cholsey) and twin daughters Violet Hedges and Ethel M Hedges (under 3 months, born Cholsey). There are also four resident servants - cook, housemaid and two nursemaids.
Son Gerald Burnard Hedges, born in 1880, died in 1889, aged 9.[2]
Further children born by the 1891 census indicate Ellinor moved to Brightwell, near Wallingford, Berkshire, soon after 1881. In the 1891 census the family are living at Brightwell House, Brightwell Street, Brightwell. Details listed - husxband Francis E Hedges (44, solicitor), Elliner E Hedges (40), son Francis R Hedges (15, scholar), daughter Alice M Hedges (13), daughter Violet Hedges (10), daughter Ethell M Hedges (10), son Charles C Hedges (8, born Brightwell), son Harold E Hedges (8, born Brightwell), daughter Winifred E Hedges (6, born Brightwell) and daughter Geraldine Hedges (1, born Brightwell). Three servants are present during the census - cook, housemaid and nurse.
At the 1901 census the family home continues at Brightwell House, Village Street, Brightwell. Details listed - husband Francis E Hedges (54, solicitor), Ellinor E Hedges (50), son Francis R Hedges (25, articled clerk to solicitor), daughter Alice M Hedges (23), daughter Ethel M Hedges (20) and daughter Geraldine Hedges (11). Two servants are recorded in the household.
At the 1911 census Ellinor Edward Hedges (60) is a visitor to Alfred and Clara Arnould (both 70) at 9 Nevern Square, Earls Court, Kensington, London. This census records that Ellinor has had 13 live children of her marriage, of whom, 9 are still living. This statement is interesting to compare to her husband's response to the same question being there had been 10 children, with 9 still alive. Registration of the births of 10 children have been confirmed in this research. Her husband and two of their adult children are recorded at this census at the then family home at High Street, Wallingford, Berkshire.
Son Charles Cuthbert Hedges (1882-1918) was killed during WW1 in 1918 in northern France, aged 36.

Ellinor's death was registered at Wallingford in the third quarter of 1922, aged 71.
Ellinor is buried at The Municipal cemetery, Wallingford, where a single monument commemorates her and her husband (died 1931).[3]
