Private George Reader died of disease during the United States Civil War.
During the Civil War, he trained as a Private in Company E of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 36 years old, married and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 3 April 1863 from Granby, Connecticut. He died of disease (lung fever) on 21 April 1863 while still training in Readville, Massachusetts.[1]
