Biography

John was born circa 1656, the son of Thomas Redding and Eleanor Pennoyer, who emigrated to Plymouth, Massachusetts during the Great Puritan Migration[1]

On October 22, 1676, he married Mary Bassett the daughter of William Bassett and Mary Raynesford in Sandwich[2] [1] [3] [4], and their children included:

  1. Eleanor, born 22 Feb 1677[5][6]

On Mar 12, 1692-3, John married Jane or Joan Hawkins in Marblehead[7] [1] [8], and their children were born in Marblehead, and then Gloucester, Mass, including:

  1. Thaddeus, baptized May 13, 1694[9]
  2. John, baptized Apr. 14, 1695[9]
  3. Mary, baptized Jan. 31, 1696-7[9]
  4. Thomas, baptized June 11, 1699[9]
  5. Hannah, baptized May 18, 1701[10]
  6. Joseph, baptized July 15, 1705 [10]
  7. Benjamin, born June 9, 1711 in Gloucester[11]
  8. Deliverance, born, Apr. 23, 1716[11]
  9. Sarah, baptized Apr. 20, 1718[11]
  10. William, baptized Apr. 20, 1718[11]
  11. Joseph, baptized Mar. 30, 1718[11]

John, died Nov. 17, 1716[12] [1]. His estate was administered September 28, 1719 in Lynn, Essex, Mass. His widow, Jane now Babson was one of the administrators[13]

His widow Jane (Hawkins) Redding married Richard Babson, Oct. 14, 1718[14].[1]

Research Notes

A citation of marriage record for John Redding and Mary Bassett with date 22 Aug 1676 is clearly in error, as the image has 8th month (old style).

John's birth is uncertain. Several sources have contradictory information:

  • Birth 1653, father Thomas Reding; One source says he was 30 in 1683 when he testified regarding his father living on Mare Point. In this same source it says that in 1715 John conveyed land as well as three islands called Reding's Islands in Cape Porpoise Harbor, that were previously in the possession of his father, Thomas Reding "who did live on ye great island and managed a fishing Trade there".[15]
  • Birth 1660, father Thomas Redding; John Reding of Gloucester, fisherman, son and heir of Thomas Reding, formerly of Casco Bay, deceased, sells to Philemon Warner of Gloucester, land and marsh which had been owned by Thomas Redding. Dated January 5, 1715, signed by John and Jane Redding his wife, by mark. Citing Essex Deeds, vol. 29, 239. John Redding of Waymouth, John Taylor of Boston and Joseph Donell of Casco Bay and Ruth his wife, quitclaimed property being sold by Eleanor Redding, widow of Thomas Redding, 1680. John Reading of Gloucester died November 17, 1716, age 56, citing "History of the Town of Gloucester and Cape Ann'", author Babson, page 261.[16]
  • Birth about 1640, father Thomas Redding; John was left with Gowan White at age 5 in 1645. John was in the fishing business at Kennebec river. John Redding, now of Weymouth, granted land in Casco Bay and meadow bounded by Elleanor Redding's land to Edward Budd of Boston citing Book 3, page 43, February 18, 1678 and the "History of Weymouth" Volume IV page 567 which said John Redding certainly resided in Weymouth from 1678 to 1680. John Redding married first at Sandwich, Massachusetts October 8, 1676, Mary Bassett, daughter of William and Mary (Rainsford) Bassett. John Redding married second, before 1710, Jane _______. John Redding came to Gloucester after 1700 and before 1711, settling on Marblehead Great Neck. John Redding died in Gloucester November 17, 1716; widow Jane married Richard Babson of Gloucester October 14, 1718. John's children by his first wife, Mary, were Eleanor and Ebenezer and perhaps others. By his second wife, Jane, John Redding's known children were Benjamin, born 1711; and Deliverance, born 1716.[17]
  • John Reding (1660- ) married 2/wf? Jane Hawkens March 12, 1792-3 at Gloucester[18] NOTE: This is the same exact date as shown for John Riddan who married Joan Hawkens in Marblehead, so perhaps this record from Torrey assumes that the two Johns and the Joan/Jane are the same couple. No vital records have been found for this marriage in Gloucester.
  • Birth about 1654, father Thomas Redding; probably he is the one who married Mary Basset October 22, 1676 and had daughter Eleanor. He was of Weymouth in 1678; of Wells by 1689-90; moved to Ipswich by 1698 when he had a second wife, Jane. He finally moved to Gloucester where he died November 1716, age 62. Widow Jane married Richard Babson in 1718. He quitclaim the Cape Porpus islands and the No. Yarmouth property in 1715 and 1716.[19]
  • Birth 1654, son of Thomas Redding and Eleanor "Penny"[20]
  • Birth about 1660; John Reading died at Gloucester November 17, 1716, age about 56 years. His widow, Jane Reading, married Richard Babson October 14, 1718. She was his Richard's second wife, his first being Mary _______.[21]
  • Birth 1640, son of Thomas Redding; John Redding was a seaman, resident in Weymouth. He sold land to Edward Budd. He quitclaimed rights to land Eleanor Redding, relict of Thomas Redding, sold, November 19, 1680. His father had left John in the care of Gowen White in June 1644. It is supposed that John Redding, son of Thomas, is the one who married Mary Bassett at Sandwich October 22, 1676. John certainly resided in Weymouth from 1678 to 1680.[22]
  • Birth February 3, 1664-5, John Riddans, son of Thaddeus Riddans'; possibly born at Lynn; married Joanna Hawkins, daughter of Thomas. John administered Thaddeus Riddan's estate when he died January 6, 1690-91.[23]
  • Jon Riddan, son of Thaddeus and Eliza Riddan, was born at Lynn February 3, 1664-5.[24]
  • John Riddan married Joan Hawkens March 12, 1693 at Marblehead.[25]
  • "There is no known connection between the Riddan or Reading family of Casco Bay, and Lynn or Marblehead, yet such is very likely the case..." Thaddeus Riddan's son John, born February 3, 1664-5; died at Lynn, September 1719. This same John Riddan owned a large estate in Marblehead, and married March 12, 1693, Joanna, daughter of Thomas Hawkins. Children Thaddeus, bp 1694; John, bp 1695; Mary, bp 1696-7; Thomas, bp 1699; Joseph, bp 1705; Elizabeth, bp 1709; Hannah.[16]
  • John Reddan died at Marblehead August 18, 1719, in his 48th year.[26]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Having pretty exhaustively researched him, here is a summary of my thoughts:
  • John Redding, son of Thomas Redding, born about 1660; married Mary Bassett and Jane Hawkens (not necessarily on March 12, 1693, though); children Ellenor, Ebenezer (possibly), Benjamin 1711, and Deliverance 1716. John Redding died Nov 17, 1716, Gloucester
  • John Riddans, son of Thaddeus, born about 1664-5 at Lynn; married Joan or Joanne Hawkens March 12, 1693 Marblehead; children Thaddeus, John, Mary, Thomas, Joseph, Elizabeth, Hannah, all at Marblehead. John Riddans died August 18, 1719 at Marblehead
  • I think the three children in the list baptized April 20, 1718 at Gloucester, probably belonged to different parents. John of Gloucester had already died by then, and the records are baptisms from First Parish rather than birth records. If the three children had been living when Deliverance was born in 1716, it seems they would have been baptized before her, or at least her with them in 1718.
  • The lack of birth or death records for John Redding surely made his separate identification from John Riddans problematic. The last names are so similar, as were their wives' names. Torrey showing both couples with the same marriage date, in different towns, which didn't help, but I was only able to find vital records to support John Riddan and Joan Hawkens marriage in Marblehead.

My recommendation is to create a profile for John Riddans and move some of the material into it, and connect it to father Thaddeus Riddan and his wife. I'll be happy to help disambiguate them if you'd like.

Where did his birth year come from?

I didn't change the dates which were set on the orphaned profile. I assume someone just guessed an age at marriage. I haven't undertaken to understand the accepted form for documenting when this appears to be the situation.

I found another article, which sheds a bit more information on John. Society of the Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Issue 10, page 26

This says John was born about 1653, something about this having been stated 30 years later.

According to Putnam Magazine, volume 4, this profile appears to be for the son of Thaddeus Riddan. The magazine shows John's marriage in 1693 to "Joanna" Hawkins, and lists children Thaddeus, John, Mary and others with the same birthdates as are in this profile. Is this possibly a conflation of a John Redding and a John Riddans?

Here is a link to the Putnam Magazine, Volume 4: https://books.google.com/books?id=fb8UAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false See page 129.

Is there information you can shed on this profile? I'd be happy to further discuss it prior to any changes being made (or not being made). I've been researching Thomas Redding and his wife Eleanor in the past couple of days and may be able to help.

Thank you, S

This doesn't help me much. Is NEM suggesting that Jane may be the Joanna described in Putnam's? Joanna's children appear to be somewhat older than my ancestor Deliverance, who isn't listed. Might Jane and Joanna be sisters? I don't have any strong opinion about what should be done here.

Now I'm trying to figure out whether the Sarah Prince of the Putnam's article is my relative. She's not a listed child of my 6th ggf, who is the only James I know of in the vicinity.

It appears that his last name at birth should be Redding, with Reading as his current last name, as the son of Thomas. Or is John a son of Thaddeus Riddan..?

Just a warning. A Mary Bassett of Lynn is frequently commingled with Mary from 1654. Thad Mary was dau of William of Surrey and his wife Sarah Burt who also was his step sister. They all lived in Lynn. There were a lot of children. I spent hours on them until I discovered I was going after the wrong Mary. I have not to date seen an ancestry tree with the correct data for Mary Redding. There are trees but no records all apparently copied from someone else.
