Biography

Sarah Ann, the eldest of six children born in Harbury, Warwickshire, to Thomas Reading, a carpenter, and Mary Sprawson, was baptised [1] at the local parish church on the 17 July 1831.

Her siblings were Elizabeth who was baptised [2] in 1833 , Henry 1834 [3] , Thomas 1837 [4] , Edwin 1839 [5] and Emma. Tragically their father, Thomas, died aged 32 in the spring of 1841, his funeral was held on the 19 March, [6] less than ten days before the baptism of his youngest daughter on March 28th [7].

The 1841 census, held on the 6 June, [8] shows Sarah Ann staying with her grandmother in 'Back side' Harbury, whilst her widowed mother and the remainder of the family are nearby in 'Farm Street' [9]. Ten years later at the time of the 1851 census [10] Sarah Ann is staying with her grandfather whilst her mother, Mary, who has remarried [11] and is now Mary Bird. is staying with husband William Bird (a baker) and children in 'Farm Street' [12].

Three years later in November 1854 Sarah marries [13] John Harris an Engineer from West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Sarah gives birth to their first child, Mary Ann in 1855, baptism records indicate the family are living by this time, in Guns Lane West Bromwich. A second daughter Frances Elizabeth follows in 1858, the 1861 census shows they continue to live in Guns Lane [14]. Three more daughters Emily, Clara and Flora (aka Mary) are born in the 1860's, the whole family are recorded living together on the 1871 census. [15].

Eldest daughter Mary Ann marries Joseph Jones from Oldbury on the second of February 1882 and two years later, on the thirty first of May 1884, second eldest, Frances Elizabeth, marries John Woodhouse from Cradley Heath.

Census records [16] [17] suggest Sarah, John and their three youngest daughters continue to live together throughout the 1880's and 1890's and are shown living in Dudley Street, West Bromwich on the 1901 census [18].

Sarah passed away, aged 70, in the autumn of 1901 and her burial service [19] was held 1st October at Saint Peter's Church West Bromwich, her husband died early in the year of 1902 and his funeral was held, four months later, at the same church on January 28.
