Biography

Sadie Albertie Reaney, daughter of George Reaney and Bertie Waddell, was born 29 November 1895 in Metcalfe, Ontario[1][2][3]

Note that Sadie's middle name is "Albertie", like her mother and as it was written in her mother's Bible.

According to her sister Elva, their father was opposed to her beau, Clifford Shirley, on religious grounds, so they eloped and were married[4] 31 May 1916 in Ottawa, Ontario.

Sadie and Cliff led a loving and religious life, dedicated to the Pentecostal faith. Their entire married life was spent in a white clapboard home on Main Street, Metcalfe, Ontario.[5] They had no children.

Sadie died at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on 29 April 1979 following a lengthy illness in her 84th year. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Claire Mullen on Wednesday, 2 May 1979. Pall bearers were Charlie Shirley, Alvin Tierney, John Smiley, Ron Stuart and Don Fairchild. Both Sadie and Cliff are interred at plot 67 in the Union Cemetery, Metcalfe, Ontario[6].

Baker Visits Couple On 60th Anniversary

On Monday, May 31, 1976, friends and relatives along with Walter Baker, M.P., visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Shirley, to honour them on the occasion of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Mrs. John Smiley gave Mrs. Shirley a beautiful corsage of red roses and Mr. Shirley a white carnation. The congregation of the Edwards Pentecostal Church presented the couple with a potted gloxinia. Other gifts of flowers, plants, money and cards were also presented.

When we went up to Ottawa on long weekends and holidays, we often stopped by for an evening or afternoon with Aunt Sadie and Uncle Cliff. Sadie was 21 when mom was born so she always seemed 'old' to me and my brother. We were always reminded to be on our best behavior and, for goodness sake, no swearing! When we were very young, we would be put into the bed for a nap in the afternoon - a real feather bed with beautiful quilts that Aunt Sadie and her friends had sewn over the years. And in the very early days, plumbing included the pump in the kitchen and the 2-holer out behind the garage.
