Biography

Daniel Reardon was born in about 1848 in London, England.

  • Note: he may have been confused with another Daniel Reardon who was born in West Ham, Essex, as he lived in West Ham in 1891 and 1901 - on both of those censuses his birthplace is listed as London/Middlesex. The details below up to the 1881 census may therefore be incorrect.
  • Daniel Reardon, son of Daniel and Ann/Hannah Reardon of Ireland.
  • The family is recorded as Rerdon, Riordan, Reardon.
  • Daniel was an inmate at West Ham Union Workhouse for some years. In 1861, aged 12 he is attending School.
  • At the taking of the 1881 Census, Daniel Reardon is employed as a Clerk at West Ham School & Union. Marital status single.

Daniel Reardon married the widow Mary Ann Symons (nee Kyle) in 1891. The marriage was registered in Poplar, London in the second quarter of the year.[1]

  • Note: On the 1891 and 1901 censuses, Mary's children were listed as Daniel's nieces and nephews - all with the surname Reardon. It is not entirely clear why they are listed this way. They seem to have officially adopted the name Reardon, as two of her daughters married using it and her son Frank Reardon was the Executor of Daniel's will. At least three of Mary's children were concieved after Mary had been widowed - perhaps Daniel really was their uncle, and a brother of his fathered them out of wedlock? Or maybe Daniel was their father?

In 1891 Daniel Reardon (age 42, Registrar of Births and Deaths) lived at 36 Holme Road in East Ham, Essex with his wife Mary A (44) and four nieces & nephews: Charles (14, Scholar), Florence (12, Scholar), Frank Heine (10, Scholar), and Kate (7, Scholar).[2]

In 1901 Daniel Reardon (age 51, Registrar of Births & Deaths) lived at 17 Holme Road in East Ham with his wife Mary Ann (55) and three nieces & nephews: Florence (21), Frank (20, Surveyors Clerk), and Kate (17, Student).[3]

Daniel Reardon passed away on 1 Mar 1902, aged 54 years. His death was registered in West Ham in the first quarter of the year.[4]

  • "REARDON Daniel of 17 Holme-road East Ham Essex died 1 March 1902 Administration London 19 March to Frank Reardon actioneer's-clerk Effects £127 12s. 9d."[5]
